I read somewhere that the Nexus One won't be offerered with family plan

Is that correct? I would still be paying the $30 I am paying now for data on mine, my wife has dumb phone, and daughter has an "enhanced media"
phone so what would be the reason?

Because the phone is sold through Google, they are the ones subsidizing it, so they choose what plans it would be profitable for them to sell it on.

Family plans are Horrible when it comes to profitability (especially if the one getting the expensive phone is a 9.99 add a line) and since they can't make up the money by selling the primary line something (like stores can) they most likely won't offer it.

The only way I see them offering the N1 on those low revenue plans is if Verizon offers them special spiffs to make up for the cost.

You Might be able to get it on the primary line.. maybe... but as I said, it's wholly up to google.

PhoneScoop said that the Pre would not be available on Share lines either. I didn't believe it though. It may be true with the N1. We'll see.

If you go through the process of ordering a Nexus it specifically states "individual plan." There's nothing that I saw that said it couldn't be changed later on, but I'd be worried about changing it with Google's "etf."

That would be the dumbest move vzw would make. I don't think they would do that.

They've done dumber things like turning down the Iphone. I think I will wait to go family plan until this shows up and see what the policy will be for it.

Turning down the iphone was dumb?

Say that Honda approached you today with the idea for a brand new cellphone. They wanted you to invest millions in getting the production plans up and going, but you couldn't have any Quality control over the device. They would set all pricing and demanded special plans just for their device. They would also get the lionshare of this revenue

Oh, and they wont let you do any troubleshooting on the device either, or insure it. They tried making a PDA a few years back but it failed miserably. And the new phone idea is totally unlike anything on the market.. lets say a VIOP phone for grandmothers.

That's what happened with the iphone. A company that NEVER made a phone before, had previously fail...

You might wanna calm down with the common sense. Not really appreciated by the iSheeple.

Thinking Differently removes a part of their brain, and anyone who doesn't sell the iCrap is wrong and stupid for doing so.

Seriously tho... good points.

It is unreal that people criticize Verizon for turning Apple down.

Google is deciding the pricing of the device.

Customers have complained for years how they want something more like the European cellphone industry (where carriers are dumb pipe suppliers) and you get to choose from an array of phones. The Google phone program is moving towards that and you guys STILL complain.

You can have cheap phones and limited choices or you can have expensive phones and greater choices. You can't have both because somewhere in there companies have to make money.

You can pay full price for the phone, without contract.

You can pay discounted price for the phone, with contract.

Companies make money either way.

To say you don't have an option is silly. You save money on a contract (Same monthly bill either way - discount on price of phone), but nothing is stopping you from purchasing a phone to stay out of contract.

no, they are complaining because you won't be able to get the N1 on a family plan (9.99) with a discount

How would Verizon be making a dumb move when it's not even Verizon making the decision?

That's like blaming Coca-Cola for the grocery store's decision to stock Coke next to dog food.

There SHOULD be a completely different pricing structure for non-branded devices. I've been waiting for this to happen since the whole "Open Development" concept launched. The Nexus One should be the first device to come anywhere near my expectations in this regard.

The Saygus Vphone has been sitting out there for a while. Verizon has been sitting on it probbly due to the fact that one can use it as a Wi-Fi hot-spot and connect up to eight devices with it. No doubt they want to find a way to charge for that feature.

The Palm Pre can be used to do the same and they aren't sitting on that one.

Kinda shoots your idea about it not being released yet.

No it doesn't. The Pre cannot connect to eight devices. And Saygus isn't as desperate as Palm. Verizon has many reasons not to want the Vphone to succeed since it is an Open Device. Let's hope they find another carrier to work with.

You had me at the part where the company who's never released a phone is less desperate than the one that's been doing it for most of a decade. 🙂

This is how they'll fix that:

https://www.phonescoop.com/carriers/forum.php?fm=m&f ... »

500 MB = $19.99 + $0.05/MB ~$50/GB
3 GB === $39.99 + $0.05/MB ~$50/GB
5 GB === $59.99 + $0.03/MB ~$30/GB
10 GB == $99.99 + $0.03/MB ~$30/GB

Smartphones would probably be ineligible for the smaller plans, and have a $20 minimum like the iPhone 2G had. Also NO EXTRA CHARGE FOR TETHERING, just let it come out of the same bundle of data.

There would be no need to charge extra for 3G sharing, either. Let the user deal with it. The towers don't care how many devices are using the data stream- the only thing that's relevant is the cost per byte.

No. They want a piece of that tether feature, too. The same way they charge an absurd $40 for it on the Pre.
