This phone is 3 years old at least. I got it off craigslist for 35 dollars. The verizons person told me it falls under their smartphone plan, and requires a 10 data plan. If I blocked it I could still text but not get picture or video texts. So I blocked it. I could see the charge if I got a BB of some other type of phone like a BB. This leads me to believe that 99.9 percent of the verizon phones will require this 10 charge just to get it out of the consumer. Don't think it is right and should be stopped. I sure miss Alltel and Chad....Contract with Alltel is up in 4 months will be going some where else after that. I remember now why I left verizon 4 years ago....
...
All 3G multimedia and 3G smart phones now require data plans the only phones that do not are the simple feature phones ☹️
...
That phone does not fall into the category of phones that require a data feature.
...
The rep who helped me activate it yesterday said it was. The computer was automatically doing it she could not stop it. I had to put a block on it to stop it. I can no longer get picture texts only word texts because I blocked it to save the 10 dollars. She was nice and even agreed it was a rip but nothing she could do..

Vote with your wallet and hit the road to another carrier if you're displeased.

Acdc1a you seem like a smart person...

The ESN change went through without a hitch. I don't have a data plan and the change did not prompt me that the 8300 required one. Your rep was either incompetent or (more than likely) miffed that you were calling in to do something that you COULD have done for yourself via My Verizon. Now I have to go and switch the ESN back. I forgot how swiftly these changes are processed if there are no conflicts. Maybe I will switch to my Motorola Black Q.
...
Verizon may be a joke. *Bleep* 'em, really, but not because the VX8300 requires a data plan. It doesn't. My suggestion would be to sign up for My Verizon and make your changes through there in the future. My thought has always been that I trust me more than anyone they have working at the call center or retail store. Calling them is always a last resort. They don't give consumers the ability to add a full text or data block via My Verizon. So I might have to call for something like that, but it is always with an extreme sense of trepidation.

Thanks I will give it a shot...
...
Did it online seems to have worked. Thanks for the info....

I have a LG-VX-7000 active, but I also have a damaged 8300 laying around somewhere. When I find it, I am going to go online and switch it over and I will let you know my finding.
...
Sorry dude, you were lied to. That rep would not be able to place a data block on a device which requires the data plan. Maybe you should call back and get a competent rep?
...
I hope you are right, and thanks for the info. The person who helped me seemed to know what she was talking about but you never know. Thanks.

I've noticed that the computer systems are defaulting the plan when you do an ESN change on some phones. If the rep says it cannot be removed (and they actually tried), have them complete the ESN change and then go back and do a feature change to remove it. I will pay any corporate Verizon rep $20 if they can prove to me that it cannot be removed on an older phone. I've done it several times - even on phones which are on the list but were sold before the change (i.e. someone activates an env3 that used to be on someone else's account and was purchased before the change went into effect).
I've mentioned this several times: Verizon has identified exactly which models fall under the "3G Multimedia phone" category, and they are all current...

V710 was not EV-DO the E815 was.
...
🤣 that made me chuckle.......smartass
...
My ex threw my V710 at a wall and broke it. Man, I wish I had it or an E815 now. Since, I can't afford a PDA plan.
...
I actually have a 815 with about 10hrs of usage floating around somewhere. I won it in a contest but liked my lg8000 so I didn't use it long. I keep considering that I should find it and throw it on eBay
...
Wow. I had an 815 and thought it was 100% better than anything LG made at the time. What is it with people's fascination with LG? I've never been impressed with their phones. Was the 8000 the one with the blinking lights? No, that was the 6000 maybe. Now THAT was the last LG I really liked. The one with the dancing lights that you could change the pattern. Haha.

Ummmm...Motorola makes crap and up until the Versa LG didn't. Yes the E815 and V710 had GREAT RF (as did my beloved Timeport 270C) however there were numeral fails in there: The T720 (which Verizon later deemed a defective phone and replaced any unit with a T730), V265 and 276 and the C333 and C343 all the 120s and V60s and worst of all they all had that stupid defective charging port. Then there was the Silver Q. *Sigh* Plus the debacle where Verizon refused to open up Bluetooth protocols on the V710, instead settling a class action lawsuit and giving employees of rival carriers the "Verizon cripples phones" mantra. Who would ever believe that they would embrace an open platform like Android (Thank you iphone!) So yeah, if you had eve...

No, I don't sell phones, so I can only comment from a consumer perspective. My personal experience with Moto has been better than that of LG but I know the phonescoop world hates Moto. Until now...since everyone I know with a Droid loves it.
...
I don't know about the PhoneScoop world or what that has to do with anything. I am speaking from eight years of sales and service and two customer service and tech and I have good reason to dislike them. I used to cut my reps up when I would get a return that was some Motorola junk. Before the Versa the last terrible LG in my memory was the TM510. Which is really LG infancy. So yeah, speaking from practical, real world experience...Motorola fail. I still wouldn't own a Droid despite all the rave reviews. Call me superstitious but after going through 10 Silver Q exchanges...I'll pass.

Thanks for correcting me.
I was in a hurry. I should have used the LG VX-8000, which was the first EVDO-capable phone on Verizon.

It doesn't change the fact that the only 3G Multimedia Phones that require a data plan are the ones conveniently listed on the "3G Multimedia Phones with data requirements" list.
