I currently have 4 lines. I go through about 3,000 text a month. about half are "in network". The rest come from a few out of networks but mostly facebook. I have a second line that goes through about 2000 texts, over half are "in network" and weather alerts. Then I have the last two lines that don't text, or use any data. They only use night and weekend minutes or make emergency calls. We're boring .. lol, and pretty much go through an average of 150 minutes per month. My husband would like to get a blackberry for him and myself. I figure that once we have the data plans it will cut back on our texting so an add on plan for that will work? We currently have the "Talk & Text" for 700 minutes. We would like to stay around $200 a month. What w...

Please explain your assertion that once you have Blackberries your texting will decrease. Will you cease receiving Facebook messages and weather alerts?

I only have the alerts sent to me in a text because I cant go to a website to see them. I figured that I would just go to a website to get the weather and use the facebook app to see updates instead of having a text sent to my phone that someone has updated.

I'm not sure how everything works, the rep told me that I could use the facebook application to update my status and see others updates without using a text message. Is this not correct?

Talk 700 will only save you $10 versus going with Talk and Text 700. Because you MUST have a text feature with Unlimited text messaging to Verizon customers, the cheapest feature is going to be $10 which includes 500 texts to non-Verizon users and unlimited texts to Verizon users.

Breakdown:

$60 Primary Data plan $29.99 Text $10
$9.99 Secondary(1)Data plan $29.99 Text $10
$9.99 Secondary (2)
$9.99 Secondary (3)

This is going to bring your total to $169.95

If you were to stick with Talk and Text 700

Breakdown"

$90 Primary Data plan $29.99
$9.99 Secondary (1)Data plan $29.99
$9.99 Secondary (2)
$9.99 Secondary (3)

This would bring your total to $179.95

Honestly, if you are already on Text and Talk....

I do not know if the account holder is 65 or not, but apparently it does not matter. I tried to build a Nationwide 65 Plus Family Share plan and it would only offer Multimedia and Basic handsets for purchase...no Advanced Devices.

A "loyalty plan" isn't something you get for being a loyal customer, it's something you get when you're itching to leave Verizon and the company is looking for some plan to keep you from switching, ergo keeping you loyal.

I agree with Azeron on this one, keep the unlimited text, at least for now. Give it a couple months, at least, and then reevaluate your texting needs. If a number of your texts are going to Blackberry users, shifting to Blackberry IM will reduce texts. Also, allowing the Facebook app to intercede with your email updates will save you from Facebook texts - be sure to turn that off!

I really appreicate all the help with this. 🙂 I will stay where I am and see where we end up after a few months texting wise. I think the facebook app and blackberry messanger will save us a great deal of texts. Especially if the updates I do on the facebook aps don't count as texts. One rep on the phone told me they did and another one told me they didnt. The same for AOL instant messanger. I should have just asked here first. 🤣

Mobile IM on your blackberry will use your text allotment. I know this first hand. The Facebook app I am unsure but I believe it will, also. Besides that even if you half your Verizon to Verizon messaging The $5 text package will not suffice. If the two of you are only texting one another then Blackberry Messenger is the way to go, plus Blackberry Messenger is more secure. Verizon and all the other telcos WILL sell you out to the Feds make no mistake about it. You guys may want to consider signing up for Google numbers and taking advantage of the text to email feature. This would entail giving out a second number, however. Is it worth saving $30 per month to you? It is to me. *Shrug*

Mobile IM (the name of an application) does use your text messages. So don't use Mobile IM. If you have a Blackberry you can run each IM client's app and just use the Internet connection. I never use Mobile IM on any phone where I can simply use an app for it.

On my Blackberry I use Google Talk and Blackberry IM. My wife and I were able to cut down our texts from over 1000 a month, each, to about 50 for me and 200 for her. I primarily IM, either through Google Talk or BB, and only text to a few people from time to time. My wife texts her family and friends somewhat, but was mostly texting me. When we shifted to Blackberry IM, we shifted from unlimited text down to a cheaper plan. It just made sense.

Since then, my wife is still...

Ah! Those sneaky *bleepards*! So if I download Yahoo Messenger for Blackberry to my 8330 then it would not used texts, but their app does. Good to know.

I called and canceled one of my lines last night. The guy made a half-hearted attempt at a save so I gave him a 10 for rep performance. Unfortunately, I could not honestly say that I would ever recommend VZW to a friend (not when I've already sent five of them to Page Plus). I think they may be calling me back today.

I think this will be my last question. VZW has stopped every text I have at 160 characters on each phone I've had. I can type more of course but always get that message that "vzw only sends the first 160.. blah blah blah" Will a blackberry to the same thing if I text out of network?

Yes. In fact on my 8330, Compose SMS only allows 160 to anyone. Now...you could always compose MMS and are only limited to 1000 characters. You don't HAVE to embed a pic if you do not wish to.

I use the Beyond 160 app on my Blackberry phones, fixes the problem that way, too. I had a World Edition for a while, and didn't have the MMS option.
