Simple feature phones

howardk111

I just checked Verizon's website for what it calls "simple feature phones" to ascertain what is available if one wants a phone with some features (such as a qwerty keyboard, for instance). There are really slim pickings available. I don't know how Verizon intends to keep such customers. Maybe it figures that however many they lose will be offset by those that the reps can talk into accepting a data plan. It's apparent, though, that Verizon is not interested in servicing customers who just want to talk but want a nice phone for whatever reason.

eh,I'll be honest that if I was still a rep, knowing that someone couldn't come in and get the highest discounted phone just because they could, and put it on their Nationwide loyalty digital choice plan would be nice. I don't agree with the required data, but I think there is something to be said about people picking the phone that matches their needs.

Honestly.. if the 8360, Entice, etc weren't part of this change it would be a lot better. (though still confusing about the data.. required messaging makes more sense if you are looking at requiring a feature on qwerty phones)

I expect stores will sell a lot of smooths, 5500s, an Intensty's until (hopefully) a few higher quality options come out

I know people who want a querty keyboard solely to type in their schedule on their calendar. Why should they have to buy a data plan in order to do this?

Samsung Intensity and Razzle both are qwerty 1x only phones. I actually don't mind the intensity, but yeah, hopefully there is better options

It's a full smaller keyboard. Look up the Motorola Droid, Pixi Plus, Samsung Intensity, or BlackBerry Curve to name a few. They have Qwerty keyboards.

A QWERTY keyboard is any keyboard with the first alphanumeric keys being Q, W, E, R, T and Y, thus spelling QWERTY. You're probably using one on your PC right now. 😛

Well, honestly? A calendar is a very important part of any phone to me, and the calendar that comes with full-qwerty dumphones is abysmal to say the least. If that's their goal, a pen and paper might actually be better. And I'm not trying to be a wiseass here, I'm dead serious.

What I don't get about the whole thing is that Verizon says that any phone that is EVDO capable is now considered a 3G Multimedia phone. Then why is the Convoy, Barrage, and Rock not on that list? I sell for Verizon and I can't stand what just happened. Yeah, the newer high end price plans are fantastic, but Verizon just ripped the pockets out of a ton of American families that want to talk and text on a phone that has a decent camera and takes video.

Verizon is done. I spend almost 200 bucks a month for texing and talking. Now they want me to spend 9.99 more a month for a data plan for a nicer phone. There responce after a complaint is that every one is doing, good luck finding a a company that doesnt charge for the nicer phones. I think what happen is they baited everyone in with unlimited texting and then only offered difficult equipment to complete that task. Next thing you know their free phone section will be a soup can with a string attached. I just want to have the option to by a phone like ENVY 3 and NOT have the data plan. I dont want to surf the web but want the key board, camera, and MP3 player. Why are we as customers letting these cell phone companies hold a gun to o...

I Agree on some points, I dont think the envy 3 and several other of those devices should have mandatory data plans. but I also work in sales for verizon and you have no idea how many people were offered data and declined it and were all about ill never use it nad neither will my kids then were told about blocking it and opted not to. guess what they were the same people calling in yelling for credits because they racked up $80.00 + in data charges. and The one thing they all had in common was those phones. But the main thing about them has alot to do with manufacturers Maybe they will start making versions without the Html web browsers. thats what makes them so data heavy
And as for blackberies, theyre data devices optional data didnt wor...

I think this come down to the owners being ill responsible and not blocking their web use. I am a customer that knows what is being charged to them. Verizon should use the one strike policy. If you screw up once get it explained to you and give them a break. It you screw up twice...tough luck. This comes down to the little guy getting chumped. Because Johnny spends his mommy's and daddy's money checking You Tube, I get punished. I want the choice to use HTML web ready phone with entering a contact with the provider. I want to use the cell phone for a cell phone..not a internet provider. Turn it off on the phone and the issue is over. Verizon was and still remains a leader in the cell signal provider business, I guess their towers a...

I didnt mean to offend or lump you in to a group. The strike policy was in place for years. My point was, you said you dont want the internet, i said i agreed with you on the fact that the envy 3 shouldnt have a data plan requirement but alas, It has an html web browser. My point was If the manufacturer would put the kind of detail like that of the envy3 inot a non-html phone maybe it wouldnt have a data requirement. And also why would you want the option to get an html enabled phone when you said you didnt want to have your cell phone company be your internet provider. Html is an internet thing. I think you meant a multimedia device that had a full keyboard and didnt involve the web.

No harm no foul... I am just upset. As customers, we all should be very upset about not be able to purchase ANY phone and use it for just a cell phone. An example would be - I like the blackberry because of the keyboard and the way it feels agaist my ear during a call. I should be able to purchase it and use it for just a call and text plan. Anything I add to it should be all a cart AND should be able to be added to AND removed during that contact call and text plan. The cell phone companies are out of control. Everyone has one and now the cell towers are paid for...they GOT US! Myself, I have already emailed the marketing department of Verizon. I suggest you do too. Explain you want the freedom to purchase ANY phone and add on al l...

As soon as the 700 MHz network is up and running, you'll likely be able to get any kind of LTE device you want without any kind of data package or strings attached at all.

You'll just have to wait 12 months for it to happen, but it's coming. Nothing can stop it from happening. Just be prepared to buy unsubsidized, unlocked handsets at whatever price the manufacturer decides to sell them to you at.

I don't believe it. Dick Lynch is already on record about tiered pricing.
...
CellStudent

Feb 24, 2010, 2:15 AM
Exactly.

Low tier, low usage, low price.
High tier, high usage, high price.

I still fail to understand why everyone thinks segmented pricing means everything is going to be expensive. It *has* to be price competitive with WiMAX at launch or it will never go anywhere.

Best power and processing estimates right now are that processing signals on LTE will cost about 1/2 what the EVDO network does. I see 5GB 4G-only plans starting at $39.99 with tiers going all the way up to 100GB packages. It's not going to be a huge sticker shock, except for the high cost of unsubsidized handsets.

Don't wimp out on me here. If you are out of contract then DO what you said. Leave them! Verizon needs to see significant losses in THIS quarter in order to realize that they messed up royally! Where should you go? It depends. If you want to keep the Verizon network with a cheaper price there is Page Plus. $39.99 Unlimited Talk and Text. OR you can go with Sprint or T-Mobile. There networks are not as expansive though. I agree with you ONE HUNDRED PERCENT! So what are you going to do about it?

After being with Verizon Wireless (Air Touch) for over 20 plus years, I am going to start the process of leaving them. I maintain to all others reading this post to make a stink with not just the company but your political figures. YES, your political figures. Ponder this...do you have to purchase a certain kind of TV to get a Comcast signal or Wow Signal or Dish Signal or Direct TV signal??? At home does you computer need to be a certain brand or model the get the internet? Do you have to buy an At&T computer to get the At&t broadband service. If you recall, back in the mid 70's the phone companies were forced to end all rental contracts on home phones - then phone became availble to purchase in stores. Deregulation happened. My poi...

And do any of those companies subsidize the purchase of your TV or computer?

I want exactly what you're asking for, but the price of what we want will be paying full retail for phones from the manufacturer or a non-carrier outlet - just as when Ma Bell had to open up their network so anyone could buy a phone from Sears or Service Merchandise.

I'd rather have the freedom, but I have a feeling that I'm in the national minority.

1. Comcast does not discount your TV AT ALL. Consumers damand FREE phones, and they want to have total control over them. YOU CANNOT HAVE BOTH. That is what you're missing. You are comparing an unsubsidized market, to a subsidized one.

I am ALL FOR consumers having choice. This is what MUST happen for that to occur.

A) All phones are sold full retail, push for "global" devices for cross carrier compatibility. Contracts will "lock in" your pricing, and will also give you a discount on monthly service.

B) Data is offered as Yes/No. So this means you get a plan, or your block data. If you sign up per use, you CANNOT call and complain about the cost of data. This will be in your customer agreement. No exceptions.
