Looking for new phone
In less than a week, I'll have a new phone. With the right hinge mount broke and the manic depressive microphoe, I think my trusty Samsung SCH-A310 should be retired hammer and nail style. Plus my contract's almost up and that's always upgrade time.
So, this raises the question: What's good these days? (Not like I haven't plowed through the site often enough). I do intend on signing a new 2 year contract, and I do intend on committing myself to Verizon Wireless.
Now, about the phone.
Besides the obvious (I can talk to people without holding a can connected to another with a string), I'm desiring something customizable. You know, not like ringtones but actual GUI themes. Changing backgrounds and icons to match faceplates. Though I do...

the 8940 is a good choice and so is the moto v710

The reviews are pretty good for the 8940 except when they complain about the SD card crippling and not explain why it's bad. However, the V710? I'm not so sure I want to get a Motorola. I don't have too much faith with them.

Yeah dont go with motorola. The last good motorola i can remember was the Startac Timeport. If they would just change their charging port that would be best.

My problem is with the antennas and their cheap flip designs. Motorola only makes flip devices except the occassional bar for Nextel--always some moving part is involved. The hinges are tough, I'll grant them that, however there's a button that's pressed by a small point when you close that turns the inner display off, and I've seen a tendancy in various Moto's for this fail. Both Audiovox and Samsung seem to use a better design, where in the hinge the mechanism turns the screen on and off.

If you are interested in customizing themes (graphics, etc.), the 8940 is not good. You cannot change the outside LCD to customized graphics (only 3 different pre-loaded ones). You can however get any graphic you want by emailing to the phone and then setting it as wallpaper. The caller-ID only appears on the inside LCD, so you have to open the phone to see the picture of whoever is calling.
The feel and design of the phone is outstanding though. Call quality is great (besides the ticking), but speaker phone is horrible.
