OK, now that Verizon is here in Charlottesville...

As of yesterday, May 31st, Alltel was gone and Verizon was in charge.

I've got the cellular part of my ex-Alltel service squared away with Verizon. Now, will Verizon be offering their Fios cable service for Internet and television as well? And a land line alternative? I would prefer to have all of my communications services on one bill if it's cost-effective. I hear nothing but great things about Fios from my friends in the DC market who have it, and as far as landline is concerned, we only have a minimum plan with Embarq, so it would just be convenient to switch it over.

Any information from anyone out there about these issues?

No. Verizon Wireless is not Verizon Communications. Yes, they are owned by Verizon Communications, however there are many areas around the nation where VZW operates where there is no Verizon landline service or high speed internet or Fios.

Any possibility that we might get those other services at some point, or are we just SOL down here, stuck with Comcast for cable and internet and Embarq for landline?

FIOS would all depend on whether they own any fiber in the ground in the Charlottesville area. Also, I belive FIOS requires you have fiber optic cable running right up to your house. U-Verse is a good alternative that doesn't require a fiber path the entire distance.

As for traditional POTS phones, I know that Verizon Communications has recently started to shed that part of their buisness in order to focus on wireless. Here in Southern Illinois and (I believe) 4~5 other states, they sold off their POTS/land-line telephone buisness and infrastructure to other telco's.

Essentially (the quick answer), Verizon Communications would have to purchase Embarq for you to get Verizon FIOS any time soon. The Fed set up the landline system so you really only have one option in your area for landline.

If that is the case, I doubt they will ever bring land-line service to that area since they are actually divesting themselves from the landline phone buisness.

The landline service be damned (we have THE minimal plan from Embarq now...not a big deal)...I want Fios for by television and computer signal. Don't get me wrong...I'm thrilled Verizon bought out Alltel and now handles their wireless phone service. I'm sooooooooooo disgusted with the intermittent service we get from Comcast on the computer and television. I was hoping that along with the cellular, we would have an alternative to Comcast. Comcast took over from Adelphia in this market a couple of years ago, and truthfully, there hasn't been that much improvement. However, unless you want to go with Dish Network or Direct TV, there are no other options here for cable television.

IT SUCKS! (quoting the late Harry Chapin)

No FiOS, but you may be able to bundle with Verizon/Direct TV.
