Verizon Wireless Network Extender

Will it work without a GPS signal? ๐Ÿ˜•

Seems (to me anyways) kind of stupid the instructions tell you to place the extender near a window for GPS.

How many people have their router, CAT 5 cable running to a window. And for better coverage wouldn't you want to put the extender somewhere central, not too many windows in the center of houses these days?

Maybe I could get my landlord to put a sky light in. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Unless I'm mistaken, Verizon and Sprint GPS is network, rather than location based.

Dude, how's that answer my question? ๐Ÿคจ

The top back of the extender houses a GPS antenna. They even go as far as to supply you with a GPS antenna extension cable to remove the antenna from the extender and relocate it. ๐Ÿ˜ณ

I'm guessing it's for E911 or to make sure it's not used outside the country, or something like that.

I'm just wondering if the thing will still extend VZW's coverage with out a GPS signal?

My guess is no. They're capitalizing on t-mobile's mistake with their @home service by incorporating the GPS primarily for out of the country usage, and as a secondary purpose the 911 calls. The 911 address can always be programed in after it's connected to the network, but if the unit were able to function without the GPS it could be taken out of the country and used for free roaming. not that it wouldn't be a bad idea and i think the cell companies should charge it as a feature and capitalize on it rather than try and stop it.

keep in mind I'm a t-mobile worker, but i try to keep tabs in the latest and greatest technology.

although t-mobile can go $@&# themselves for using UMA instead of femtocell. We're the ones who really friggin need it!

I thought about going with TMO because of their UMA ability. But decided against it, nothing against TMO but our IT department are a bunch of idiots. They hand out TMO UMA phones as company phones but won't open up the internal Wi-Fi to use UMA. ๐Ÿ˜ก

I think they should outsource are whole IT department.

I have one installed and use it daily. The GPS is so that you can plug in overseas and get a super cheap cell signal somewhere that doesnt have native Verizon coverage.

I like the unit, but here are my gripes.

--It does need to be near a window to work

--Most people complain when Im on it, so I never have long calls while on the unit (people always say they can barely hear me

--It seems like two people can't talk at the same time. Sort of like an old school half-duplex speakerphone. If two people talk one person sort of gets muted.

--It is nice for texting and data tho. My emails and texts always go through without issue, I just wish the voice quality was a little bit better

What phone do you use with it?
Because all the reviews I've read gave the VZW extender high praise some even said it made voice calls louder.
