Okay, so I am ready to update my phone and come into the newer technology style phones. However, I have no clue about any of this stuff. I am hoping someone can help me and explain the different types of phones - you know - PDA vs Blackberry vs Smartphone vs dumbphone. I know about the touchscreens as I purchased my son the Dare and I've checked out his phone. But that is about all I know. I do text quite a bit and think the "querty" keyboard is pretty neat. Also, what is up with having to pay "extra" for a data plan? Is that necessary to use the internet?
My other issue is I just can't seem to justify paying $250 and over for a new cell phone? Is that wrong? I see lots of phones for sale on sites such as ebay and craigslist, but...

A smartphone is for people who want/need to have their email and the internet at their fingertips without needing to find a computer. They require a data plan (all current models anyway) of 29.99 a month or more in addition to what you are paying for your voice and texting plan. If internet and email at your fingertips is something you don't need (or if $30 a month is too pricey) you don't want to look at smartphones.

A smartphone is any phone that has it's own operating system (it doesn't use verizons operating system). They will run some version of Blackberry, Palm, or Windows Mobile.

A "dumbphone" is any phone that runs the standard operating system. They still have a lot of advanced features, but they don't require a data plan....

Thank you for your reply. I haven't gone to verizon store to discuss this because I don't like all the "sales pitches" and I really don't want to extend my contract right now as I have had some bad experiences with Verizon service recently. I guess I do just need to subject myself to a store and check out the phones and the capabilities.

Sales pitches can get annoying, but they are part of the industry because it is the only way that reps get paid. As nice as it would be to get paid for offering tech support and free advice, I can't pay my bills (or keep my job) unless I sell phones.

If the rep is really pushy, go to another one, or go to another store.

The reason I recommended a store is because ordering online is an ok option if you 1) want something basic 2)know a lot about the phones. Because if there is an issue with your device, it's a lot easier to get support from someone who sold you the device than working through the internet for it.

unless you want to use it for network applications like email, web surfing etc.

I recently got the HTC Vogue (Verizon XV6900) smartphone, partly because it was on sale for $59. but I did not add a data plan, because I don't intend to use any network/web based applications at this time.

if I want to add those features later, I can, but for now, I just have a phone with more features and access to third party software.

Yeah, it's an older phone. (which is why it was only $59)

On any new smartphone and any blackberries you need the data plan.
