You are correct. Verzion plans to open up their network to other users, but the catch is that Verizon has to approve the phone to activate on their network. So they will still have a say so in what phone are activated on the network....hopefully it will happen this year.

Not physically possible. Allowing a GSM phone onto a CDMA network is not the purpose behind the "Open Network". The idea is to allow more devices that are non-phones to be used (in reality); however, the bonus will be phones from Sprint will be eligible to be used in time. Alltel phones will be available in a shorter period of time once complete integration is done. But again...it's only as open as technology allows. They won't suddenly become a GSM carrier.

The iPhone will not work on Verizon's network period. Not until the day Apple and Verizon announce the launch of one together will it ever happen. And no that's not the start of a rumor (that's already going around).

wcdma is different from CDMA. The iphone cannot work on any CDMA network, so even with an "open" network it will not work.

Don't expect anything anywhere close to "bring your own handset" until LTE is up and running 100%. If they had any real intention of allowing outside phones to be used, Sprint handsets would be welcome at this point.

The "current" corporate position is that this initiative is to encourage the non-phone marketplace to develop.

Funny, that's not how the idea was pitched in 2007...

They have to open up for LTE because of C-block auction stipulations in the 700 MHz band. It won't happen any sooner then that.

Look for Android to make a major, major showing in early LTE devices.

Opening up the network to Sprint (U.S. Cellular, Metro PCS, other CDMA carrier) phones would only be useful for voice calls. What's the point in having a cool Java enabled phone on which the internet and data applications won't work?

That's assuming Apple hasn't altered its exclusivity by then. I agree with you, but seeing as how LTE won't be a strong phone technology for some time (it will start out as an aircard product, move to a hybrid-1X/EV smartphone in time, then be phased in), it's just as likely that Apple made a CDMA-based version by the time LTE rolls in.

No one will really see anything out of the "Open Network" until LTE rolls out. Much hearsay says Verizon Wireless will begin in the Northeast market late 2009/early 2010.

Personally, I'm super excited about that.

Don't expect your IPhone 3G ever on VZW though. But lets cross our fingers for an IPhone, LTE compatible.

Wow...Thanks all for the great feedback. I just wanted to get opinions...What is this LTE technology everyone's talking about? I am so toying around with the idea of switching to ATT to get the iPhone....I love the coverage for Verizon so I am going to stick around.

Thanks

LTE is 4G. AT&T and T-Mobile are going to migrate to the same technology. Verizon's going to start building out it's 4G network this year, where other networks will start in 2010 or 2011. T-Mobile possibly longer, given they didn't start building their 3G until last year.

It'll be a couple years before you see LTE phones, and possibly five years or more before most of Verizon's customers migrate over with dual-mode phones (CDMA/LTE).
