Need help with phone upgrade eligibility question

Hey everyone. I'm new to this particular forum and I have a question that I'm hoping someone will know the answer to. I bought a Voyager about a year ago. My wife then upgraded her phone 2 months after me on her own account and we then joined together in a family share program and traded phones (she upgraded to the Dare so we traded phones). We signed the contract sometime in June I think. So I'm the second line of the plan, but I got a second job and would like to get the Storm and use the web for my new job. I know after a year Verizon allows you to upgrade at promotional price as long as you sign a new 2 year contract. But my question is A. Can I actually do this and upgrade to the Storm for $199, and B. Would this allow me to a se...

If your line or your wife's line is eligible for the annual upgrade then yes, you can get the Storm. To be eligible for the BOGO the second line also has to be eligible or you could add a 3rd line...

You need to talk with a rep. When you moved from a single line to a family share secondary, you more than likely lost the ability to upgrade at the year mark. To be eligible for an annual upgrade your line has to be $49.99/month or higher. If your wife's line was a single line as well, then she'll likely have an annual upgrade at her one-year mark.

A family share is typically $69.99 or higher, but breaks down on the actual billing at $60 or higher for the primary line (depending on your plan) and $9.99 for the secondary line. Because the primary line carries about 90% of the cost in a family share, that line gets the perk of annual upgrades or new every two discounts at the 20-month mark.

It's ok that you were blunt. I knew that I would end up getting screwed in the upgrade department somewhere. The funny thing about this whole thing is if I log onto me and my wife's account my number shows the contract ending 8/22/09 and my wifes shows 8/30/10. So this kinda gave me a ray of hope. Also, what about adding another line? Would this do anything?

You can add another line, but expect to pay $9.99 a month. That's $240 in two years. For a $300 discount on one phone.

Ironically, it's sometimes cheaper to get two phones on BOGO and cancel one of the lines for $175. That's because the phone is normally $500 without a contract. If you had an available upgrade and added a third line, this would work to your advantage. You're not going to cancel your line anyway, so the third line might not be necessary. But if you got a free Storm and then canceled that line, that Storm essentially costs you the $175 termination fee - cheaper than the $199.99 shelf price, and much cheaper than the $499.99 full retail price.

Seems to me I recall if you do an AOL the original update carries over and the contract date reverts to a 1 year contract if it is currently longer than that and the contract end date stays the same if it's less than a year.

Every Assumption Of Liability I've done in the last several months has kept the original contract end date. And I do them quite often. AOLs are supposed to tack on a contract of one year from the change or leave a longer term in tact, but I haven't seen it put people under any contract in some time now.

The OP said he got an upgrade last year. If his contract end date is in August, then it's probably a computer goof that he might use to his advantage, assuming someone doesn't catch it.

If he did a multi-FRU (a warranty switch out to a different model rather than the same model), then his contract end date could be well before his upgrade date.

I need to know what MyVerizon thinks is his upgrade date. That would lead me in the ri...

soo... im just a bystander, but im wondering what the actualy upgrade time is suposed to be. its kind of confusing with you guys. if im on a one line account i get to upgrade every year but if im on a family account i can only upgrade every 20 months. say i sign up both lines on the family account on the same day- in 20 months do i get to upgrade both of them or just one?

It is confusing.

In the past, upgrades happened 22 months after the last phone purchase with a contract. Because each line is contracted individually, regardless of sharing minutes or not, it is possible to be on different upgrade schedules.

Today, things are a little different.

Any cell phone will get an upgrade 20 months after the last phone purchase with a contract.

Any cell phone that costs more than $34.99/month will get an additional discount on top of the discount you get for signing up for another contract. For lines $34.99/month up to $79.98/month, the additional discount is $50 on top of the discounted price of a phone. For a line that costs $79.99/month or more, the discount is $100. I know exactly what it is and it still makes my head spin. Bottom line: Standard upgrade date is 20 months from phone purchase with a discount. Everything else is an exception.

The upgrade date is 2/3/10. Don't they have the ETF that is prorated now? Technically I won't par the full $175?

**Update**

I called VZW and talked to a guy there. He told me that there is no hope for the account until 2010. No 1 year, no nothing. Funny enough, the primary line on the account (pays the $90 per month, my line pays $9.99) has been valid for 12 months which is what it says on MyVerizon. I was going to add a 3rd line for my Mom, have the primary line get the phone for $199 and give the free one to the new account, have my Mom trade my the Blackberry for my Dare and all would be happy in La-La Land...apparently, the guy told me that that wasn't true and that I could not upgrade the secondary line until at least November, and that the primary line can't upgrade until April of 2010.

I don't know if they are jerking my chain, telling...

** Latest Update **

Went to VZW store today, took my Mom who had her own account but hasn't upgraded or signed any contracts in 5 years. Added her as a 3rd line on my Family Share plan, instantly traded her my Dare for the Storm, and got the Storm for $99 after her $100 NE2. We're paying $159 per month for 3 phones to have internet now (Storm, Dare, Voyager). There was hope after all. Thanks to all for your input!

The system did not goof. He did an AOL from his name to his wife's name. AOL only does a one year contract on the transferred line. Once his contract is up on that line he could call in a negotiate for an upgrade. (I would).

The goof I was talking about was the fact that he had done an upgrade just before his AOL. I assume it was a two-year upgrade. In my area, and AOL doesn't touch the contract. So under that assumption, I thought his contract end date was a goof in the system, which I see about once every two months (where someone gets a one-year term after a two-year upgrade, or no contract after a two-year upgrade - usually done at an indirect).

I haven't seen an AOL create a contract in about a year.

An assumption of liability only entails a one year contract. Basically, if I purchase a new phone today with a two year contract and then have it transferred to someone else's name the transfer only puts it into a one year contract. However, the upgrade eligibility date is still twenty months.

Oh, and even still, if the AOL did a one-year contract, that wouldn't have effected his upgrade date. It sounded like the contract end date and upgrade dates were not on the right cycle. (part of alternate thread on this OP)

I did an AOL and now my contract end date is up in August 2009 however my Upgrade eligibility is not until March 2010.

Wow. I'd be curious to see how that was processed.

About a year ago, whenever I did an AOL, the line would likely get a one-year contract unless it had more than a year left. The upgrade date never changed.

Now, when I do an AOL (and I do them more than the rest of the sales team) the line could be month-to-month and it doesn't change the contract, nor does it change the upgrade date.

I never liked the contract extension, but there would be absolutely no reason for us to extend an upgrade date. Upgrade dates are based solely on the last discounted phone price.

Azeron, there must be a reason why your contract end is 7 months before your upgrade date. The AOL shouldn't have pushed out your upgrade like that, regardless of the...

An AOL over the phone would have reduced the contract to one year in this situation. The line would not show eligible for an annual upgrade until it has been on the new account for a full year as a price plan change/AOL will affect the ability for an annual upgrade. If you get a good rep, they can look on previous accounts and check that the line was on a high enough plan and make the exception.

An AOL will always reduce the contract to one year because the AOL team has no way to get a signature for the two year contract. Because it is a different person's name, it is a new contract. Some stores will leave the contract at two years but they can get a signature. The system rarely gets the date correct so the rep doing the AOL has to corre...
