I've pretty much decided that since my V3m is still working OK, I'm probably going to stay with Alltel service here in Charlottesville, Virginia until they are officially here, then migrate over to Verizon and upgrade my phone without having to go through a credit check, even though my credit is just fine. The thing that bothers me is that since phones generally have a finite life for sales, the phone I think I want may not be available at that time. The Samsung Renown is the one I have my eye on, and the closest thing to it is the Motorola Z6c World Phone. I went into a Verizon store in northern Virginia the other day and actually took a look at the Sammy. I was really impressed with the sturdiness, but I'm not wild about the charging p...

Nothing new yet as far as global phones. Samsung is the only provider to make global phones for VZW other than the blackberries. The Renown is a solid phone. Samsungs usually never have problems with the charging ports. LG's have more problems with the charging ports. If you go with the Renown you will be fine, you still have 30 days to try it. Good luck.

do you mean Samsung Sway?

I have no idea what a Sammy is, lol.

As of right now, I have no idea of any new CDMA/GSM phones that are non-PDA.

the renown is a global flip phone

Samsung charging ports are decent, but if your charger breaks, finding a charger for them can be difficult since they all seem to have their own chargers that don't share across models like LG's and Motorola's.

An extra travel charger would probably be a necessary expense (I will watch for the dual voltage when traveling, for sure), but as far as a car charger goes, I have been using the IGo system where all you do is replace the tip for $10! They also work fine and hold up beautifully!

Samsung is quite smart to be making quad-band GSM phones for CDMA, where Motorola seems to be making only dual-band. Too bad Nokia got rid of its CDMA manufacturing (or did they just come back?). If they could ever get the CDMA portion right, they'd be making one helluva phone!

The Renown comes with an international charger.

The Renown is quad-band because Verizon revamped their world-wide program to compete better with AT&T. The Moto RIZR Z6 was made before Verizon refocused their worldwide products, and in my part of the country has been gone from stock for months now. The Renown is its effective replacement, and I would expect to sell that for another 10 months, given our history with our CDMA/GSM phones being sold for years at a time, the build-out of new LTE systems in the next few years, as well as how new the product is (only a few months at best).

Nokia outsourced their US CDMA manufacturing for almost three years, but last year decided to stop having political issues with US-based CDMA companies, a...

The micro-USB charging port that I believe the phone uses (if not...it should have been since that was elected to be the universal port 🤣 ) is a standard for VZW's phones. Every new phone should have the same charging port, whether it be Moto, Samsung, LG, RIM (yes even RIM) or whoever...they all should be using the same port at this time. And it is very sturdy.

Yes, I remember reading sometime back that the top 5 phone manufacturers, Samsung included to the best of my knowledge, was going to be using the micro USB, found on, say, the Motorola Razr2 phone, now defunct. If that micro-USB was on the Renown, that would make the phone absolutely perfect, in my view, but if the incidence of repair and problems is as miniscule as what I have been reading in the feedback, the U810 is still going to be the phone I end up with when Alltel leaves Charlottesville in favor of Verizon service.

Many thanks to all of you who gave me some very excellent information.

Yeah, I already mentioned this in my last post. The Renown uses Samsung's second generation 20-pin charger, not the micro-usb.

Actually, epik, I'd like to know why it takes more than a year and a half to implement an agreement. On September 21, 2007, at 2:42 pm, it was announced right here on phonescoop.com that LG, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson had all agreed that Micro USB would become the standard port on mobile phones for charging, although none of them said when the new standard would go into effect. Unless something changed in the meantime (and I didn't see anything to the contrary), I'm a bit perplexed as to why the Renown has the connector it does. Surely, it's not as solid as the micro-USB, right?

Because a phone doesn't appear out of nowhere. The process for contracting a new device, designing it, creating test models, testing, redesigning, retesting, certifying FCC compatibility, registering the device with the FCC, applying for any new patents (most of the parts and pieces are all separately patented anyway), creating marketing for the device, determining a launch date, testing the first batch of devices, fixing any problems, creating packaging and inserting the final product into that packaging, the initial charge of batteries, shipping product, receiving the product at the store, making sure all the marketing at point of sale is ready, training employees on the new product, and finally, finally, finally selling the stupid thing ...

Yep, you're absolutely right, epik. I was in cellular for close to 15 years. I'm fairly familiar with everything you said, and, you know, you're right. As long as the Renown has no major issues with the charging port, it will be my phone at some point. There's nothing else about it that I have found to be a negative. I guess I forgot the start-up time interval before it actually gets to the store. Listen, a full-duplex speaker phone? Right on!!! I can find lots of things that appear to be great about the U810. I just don't want there to be a problem in keeping the battery full when I need it to be that way.

Thanks for the good info. I appreciate hearing from you.

My pleasure..

Normally I don't see too many battery issues with Samsungs. I always tell customers and friends alike to let their battery run down as far as possible before charging them. I sell about 20 batteries a day because people charge they're phone every night. Still, there's no telling.

Avoid car chargers unless it's necessary. I've noticed that I have diminished batter life for at least three weeks following use of a car charger. Also, I only use original equipment home or travel chargers when I can. I always have a better experience with the charger that was made for the phone.

The one hesitation I have on many of the Samsungs right now is the tacky keypad. If you press the keys, you'll notice there seems to be a tac...

Interesting info about the batteries. Since they are basically lithium ion now with no memory issue, why would a car charger be detrimental to a battery? As far as the "tackiness" of the keypad goes, I don't text at all, so I'd like to think that won't even BEGIN to be an issue!

Have you ever used the IGo equipment? It is SO far ahead of what the original manufacturers' equipment is, it's not even worth discussing, IMHO. The idea of only having to replace a tip rather than the entire charger when you change phones says "enviromentally friendly" to me, besides the fact that the IGo equipment is made so well.

In addition to the solid feel the Samsung U810 seems to have, I like the fact that it, along with all the other Samsungs tha...
