Plan/Bill Question

Chimpsnest

Hi All,

My NE2 is up now and I'm eligible for a discount on a new phone (w/a new 2 year agreement of course).

My plan right now is Nationwide Basic 900 (59.99 month/900 minutes) and +$10 for unlimited IN text and 500 texts to anybody on any network = 69.99/month plus fees, tax.

I'm still contemplating going w/something like the Omnia but an extra $30/month is a bit much right now for me, so I'm thinking of tweaking my plan a bit to make up for it.

I looked at my last six months of bills yesterday and I'm curious about the breakdown under "usage charges". It breaks down like this one month:

Under Voice:
Plan - Allowance 900 min, Used -700 minutes
IN Calling Allowance = unlimited, Used 715
Night/Wkend Used = 126 (I know N/W ...

You are correct. You used 700 mins from your 900. 190 txts from your 500.

I would not change the plan if I were you.

Yeah, I'd be in a lot of debt if I did, giant phone bill!

I think I'll wait for being completely connected (ie an Omnia) I just can't justify the $$ right now and I pay Verizon a TON a month for cable, internet, home phone x 2 and the VZW service.

Thanks!

NP. Also, there is a new connect plan that includes 900 mins, unlimited txt, unlimitde megabytes, and mobile email. Its $89.99 for the 900 min plan.

Its not for smartphones, but great for the Dare or Versa.

Stupid Q time: Why would that not be for smartphones? And, is the Omnia a smartphone, or are only the Blackberry's w/the email pushing considering "smart".

I think I would like a PDA, but I only want to be connected to my email if I want to be, ie I don't want the thing going off every time I get a message, but if I wanted to go online and check it I could.

I wanna be connected, but on MY terms, lol. 😉

It's a data plan for regular cell phones, and it typically offers access to services that're specific to regular cell phones, as a result. Data billing is just different for PDA's.

By the way, since you're on a 900-minute plan, you might want to take advantage of Friends & Family, just to give yourself more breathing room with your minutes.

It can't be for smartphones because they are more data intensive than dumbphones like the versa/dare are. The omnia is a smartphone.

Basically anything running Windows Mobile, Palm OS, or Blackberry OS are smartphones.

You can update your settings on most phones to change how they deal with date. Basically you want to set them to "Pull" instead of "Push" email. I'm not sure you can do it on blackberries, but I know you can set up the pull settings on Windows Mobile phones.

The Smartphones use a different type of internet server. And you can turn off your email push if you want to. The omnia ia a smartphone!

I suggest a Dare or Voyager if you want to go in and check it manually

Based on what anarchy said

"...there is a new connect plan that includes 900 mins, unlimited txt, unlimitde megabytes, and mobile email. Its $89.99 for the 900 min plan.

Its not for smartphones, but great for the Dare or Versa. "

I don't understand why it wouldn't be for 'smartphones'

And, now I get that the Omnia IS a smartphone, lol, thanks for that. If it's unlimited data then it should be for any phone, right?

I just went online and was messing around w/VZW's upgrade your phone, etc., section and I CANNOT select the 'connect' plans if I select the Omnia as a phone.

What a joke.

BEcause you need a Smart phone Data Plan for the Omina.

The Omina uses more internet then a Voyager or Dare or Versa does.

Connect plans are for "Dumb phones".

Omina is a Smart Phone.

When I talk to customers about this, I put the difference in Internet between cell phones and smartphones into a different perspective.

Remember when you had dial-up? Why did you connect to the Internet? Was it for convenience, or because you needed non-stop speed?

Remember when you moved to broadband? Didn't you find you needed more speed, an uninterpretable connection, or longer periods of Internet use? Were you tired of waiting for dial up? Did you finally get a kick-butt computer, and dial-up just felt like you holding yourself back?

YES, on the two types of phones, the Internet is generally the same. Most of the phones have EVDO revision 0, and a handful have EVDO revision A. That means, you have a broadband connection. ...

Ask yourself if you really need a smartphone. My problem in a nutshell is: I pay about $40 (with taxes) for internet in my home. That's for one desktop and 3 laptops (17-19" screens not itty bitty phone screens), we can ALL be on at the same time (or not) and the price doesn't change. For me to have a (newly released smartphone) I need $30 over and above my voice/text plan. And if the other 4 members of my family all wanted that too, well....you do the math. I mean if you need it for your work/business, that's a different story. But for the average consumer or someone just looking for a new toy, that cell phone bill could get old in a hurry.

Unfortunately, when you get different phones they aren't sharing the same connection (unless they have wifi...) and are in fact using their own connections...

When you connect multiple computers to the same internet connection, you're still only using one connection.

I would use it for work for certain, having access to my email, and the 'net, PLUS certain files, info, etc., would be great - that's the key, really, the MS Word files I'd need. I guess I could get a PDA w/wifi (since it's everywhere now it seems) and I could use that if I needed it, but then I'm talking carrying two things around, yuck. I should have gotten the Q when I could 🙂

I like new toys, but that $$ is ridiculous Between my cell, home phone x 2, internet and cable TV I pay about $220+/month. I could shave $20 by getting rid of HD boxes, but I can't go back lol. I just keep my eye on combo plans and every time I see one that's new I call VZ and ask them to hop on board and they say "sure, with a new two year agreement" and ...

Verizon hasn't required you to do a new contract just to change your plan in a long time. That changed long before we went to the %1.99/mb system.

Also, I'd be concerned with your statement about work email. If your work uses a POP3 email system (like Gmail or your local Internet service provider), then you're fine with $29.99/mo. If your company pushes email with a Microsoft Exchange Server or similar server, you'll need the commercial rate plan at $44.99/mo. The $29.99 was designed specifically for standard consumers who use their ISP email or Gmail-type system, not business email users.
