Is there anything on the Horizon that would make me stay with Verizon???

Hello,

I've been a loyal Verizon customer since they took over Airtouch. I've always been happy with the coverage and dissapointed with thier phones, but I was able to live with it. Now I am done. I am soooooooo sick of Verizon disabling features in a phone so a customer will have to pay for the feature. ie GPS, WiFI...OBX transfer... I have the Omnia and love it, but will be selling it to pay for my termintaion fees and pay for my Blackberry Bold from AT&T. Which, by the way, has GPS without paying an extra fee and has WiFi.

I used to stay clear of AT&T, but it seems like their service/coverage has finally cought up with VZW, almost. I know there are still a few spots, but I've had the Bold for a full week and so far: GOODBYE VERIZON...

please do research, you will see Bluetooth is unlocked, so is GPS and WiFi.

There coverage is no where near Verizons.

Look at the service map.

There 3G is no where near Verizons eather.

You will be downgrading.

Verizons Bold will be out April-May.

We are getting the Pearl Flip with WiFi, GPS, and EVDO Rev A.

Also, Touch HD, LG Versa which both have WiFi, GPS, EVDO Rev A.

GPS is unlocked. I use Google Maps on my BlackBerry, and my dad uses it on his Omina. I send pictures and ringtones to my friends threw bluetooth.

Theres a new Nokia comming out, the new Curve also. Also a new Palm Pro later on as well.

The Pro and new Curve will both have EVDO Rev A, GPS, and WiFi.

I think historically Verizon has always screwed around with phones so that their proprietary UI overrides what the phone manufacturer intended. Personally, I've been away from Verizon for almost two years now, but since they are taking over Alltel, I have some decisions to make myself. For the most part, I need a phone to make calls and nothing more...I don't text, I don't need a touchscreen, I don't download (maybe an occasional ringtone, but that's about it), I don't watch television on the phone (I like big screens, thank you very much!), etc. The AT&T footprint has gotten better over the last couple of years, and as long as you're using your phone in a major metropolitan area and nowhere else, AT&T might be a better choice. For mysel...

There UI has changed a whole whole lot in the past year.

I like how there service bars are set up. You can tell how many bars you have.

They unlocked Bluetooth. If yours dont work, take it too a store and they will update it for free.

They allow WiFi, and have in the past month unlocked GPS for BlackBerry and Smart PHones.

I have had the Omnia for 3 months and the GPS is not free unless you use VZ navigator. I have done a lot of research on it and I do not understand why somebody here is saying it is unlocked. It does not work with Google Maps. The bluetooth is fine, I was referring to past phones. The Wifi is on the omnia, but NO Blackberry Verizon phones have WiFi.

When will Verizon get the Bold or a good device that has true unlocked GPS and WiFi?

I travel to the desert and AT&T works out there and Verizon does not. I'm not sure how Alltel will change the coverage, but I don't think it'll make a huge difference. I really love the Bold and if the coverage continues to be good, I will keep it and the service.

My only issue with your complaints is "it's unfair"...

Everything you spoke about was in effect when you got your Omnia. No one held a gun to your head to get the Omnia.

Good luck with at&t.

You are correct, but Verizon did not advertise that the Omnia GPS is Disabled, except for VZ Navigator. When you research a phone and see the features, you assume that it would have those features included when you receive the phone.

Because with the new updates it's not disabled anymore on any smartphones?

And researching a phone is great, but make sure you are doing so for the carrier you want the phone for. Phones do have a lot of changes depending on what carriers they are on.

Theres no WiFi on our BlackBerrys because we have EVDO 3G and GPS, RIM doesnt put all 3 on there, but now they are starting too.

The bold was the first one.
The Storm has no WiFi because there was no room for it.

Look at any other Storm over seas, you will see theres no WiFi.

And make sure you have the most recent update on your Omina.

If so, take it too a store and have them update it.

My dad has a omina and Google Maps works.
and your were prob Roaming in that area with AT&T.

AT&T has no service in many places where Roaming takes over.

Even tho your phone wont say it, it is.
And Verizon has updates for all phones from teh past to unlock bluetooth, just go and have it updated.

This post is so 2003. We all know that Verizon doesn't lock any of those features. But when it comes the phones themselves, I'm right there.

Samsung, Nokia, Sony Ericson, etc, all have phones with 5 MP camera's and higher, but yet with VZW they only offer 3 phones that have 3.2 MP cameras (Dare - Sux, BB Storm - Meh, & HTC Touch - Meh) and 1 5 MP camera - the Omnia which I did not like at all. What is VZW scared of when it comes to better cameras?

I am giving T-Mo a try because the places I live have very good 1900/1800 GSM coverage and as long as I can use my phone most of the time, that's really all I need.

VZW approves the phones that are allowed on their network, so while they don't make the phones, they still determine what phones can be on their network.

Ok,

This is an interesting post, because I think it's something every verizon power user has felt at some point during their time with the company.

I get it, the highend phones are solid, but could be a little better and they will always come out later than GSM (a least in the near future). But you need to look at how you use your phone, and quite frankly that's not something that can be determined or decided on a phone forum.

You said you go to the desert, where ATT is strong. Well, depending on how much time you spend there, maybe att is a better fit. I always look at coverage first (or more importantly--coverage where you need it most), then voice quality, then phones. Switching to a carrier for a phone is ridiculous in my op...

When is Verizon coming out with the Bold??? Next year??? It is already out and has been for months. What the hell are they wating for? Are they picking it apart to find out what they can take out of it?

Sure...now Verizon has the circle of friends thing...it's been there for other carriers for years. WAKE UP and stop trying to catch up. Verizon has had Great Coverage in the past and we've been stuck with thier devices because of their great coverage, but NOW there is true competition and it is great to have. Why do you think Verizon has finally enable the GPS radios in the Smartphones??? Do you think they did it because they feel like being nice? NO! Because they are loosing customers to other carriers that do not disable these features. ...

My Big iPhone Break-up
Om Malik | Wednesday, February 11, 2009 | 2:16 PM PT | 146 comments

Earlier this morning, after enduring days and days of dropped calls and errant network behavior, I quit on my iPhone. It wasn’t an easy decision, but it had to be done. I depend almost exclusively on my mobile phone for my communications. Whether it be surfing the web, checking email, sending text messages or talking — my mobile is the center of my daily existence.

That being said, AT&T’s network just wasn’t cutting it for me. I even tried using a BlackBerry, but the network issues never quite went away. Then over the past few days, my iPhone was spending ungodly stretches of time “searching” for the netwo...

Verizon Wireless is actually a very good business company because they are out to make money. They are not out to give free goods, and services. It would be other companies that should get smarter, and start charging for these services in order to gain more profit. It's really just Americans that feel everything, and every feature would be free. You'll make the switch, but you'll come back, they always do.

No, they do not always come back. I have had many friends leave AT&T for Verizon over the past few years, but AT&T has improved in coverage drastically. I would not give it a second thought if I didn't think/no so. So far I am please with the coverage. It's only been a little over a week and so far it's fine. Plus it works in the Mojave desert, where Verizon does not work at all.

Verizon is not a good business company. They come out with phones late and features late, after other carriers have been offering the devices and features from the beginning. I hear that Verizon will come out with the BB Bold...WHEN? It is already out and has been for months. Don't give me the "Verizon tests their devices more than other carriers so it takes lon...

And, I am not staying for a couple months, a couple weeks while I continue to test AT&T and the Bold. I will be happy to leave and pay my fee with the money I get from selling the Omnia. But you continue to complain about crippled phones, bad business practices, slow to release phones.........just sounds like you need to go to another carrier, your not happy with what you have now. The phones will be released when they will be released, not because 1 customer wants it now. It is a long process to get a phone released on a particular carrier. The funny thing is that when theses phones are rushed out, people complain about the phone doesn't do this or that, complain about the price, just complain...they complain if they are released later than expected...do what is best for you, because doing business with a company that has bad business prac...

My main reason for staying with VZW is that I've literally tried every other service out there. VZW isn't perfect but since I've tried everything else, I know its the best.

I dunno if you're more of a hands-on person or more of a book study type but I can say this. Out of all the carriers, the only ones I would touch are VZW and at&t and between those two, VZW edges out at&t for reliability.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a reliability freak so I wouldn't mind using at&t if the conditions were right (if it saved me a ton of money) but as it stands right now, both services will cost me the same so I'll take Verizon Wireless for the slight advantages it gives me.

Also, I don't care about OBEX restrictions. I buy Motorola because I can...

I am still with vzw, but I have found them difficult to deal with in the past. I think the person's sentiment is that verizon is in the category of "too little, too late". I know I feel that way at least. They have left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths. I won't spite myself by switching to at&t yet, as I feel vzw's signal is still better in my area. I can honestly say that if they ever get pretty close, even at a reasonably higher expense, I will switch to them in a heart beat. I know vzw has the lowest churn, blah blah blah. A lot of people have had great experiences with verizon, and will remain loyal to the brand. I feel the sentiment of the original poster. Being nickel and dimed for years has taken its toll. I done the same thing. I left Verizon for AT&T and so far I don't regret it. I was with Verizon for years but the city I moved to has better AT&T coverage. No matter what the coverage map says, AT&T is better here. In buildings I could hardly get bars but AT&T is always pegged out. I still agree that Verizon is a great carrier but AT&T rocks. The other perks I like about AT&T is Rollover minutes, ability to use voice and data at the same time, Video Share, ability to switch phones by simply switching the SIM card, and best of all...NO COMMI UI! I LOVE THE THREAD OVER THERE.

The OP is SO set on having WiFi that he (or she) isn't even willing to consider any of the more important factors.

I used WiFi on every one of my WiFi phones and couldn't stand the speeds. I could be sitting within 20 feet of the WiFi router and get horrible speeds. Seeing as how I usually have multiple phones, I've done side by side speed comparisons on the same models with the same file download, and always found the cell network faster. This is with a full-range connection to WiFi and a 2-bar range on the wireless network.

In any case, it IS funny that this person's been gone only two weeks and complaining. I'm glad it's not a customer I have to deal with.

He really believes that if Verizon wanted Wi-Fi in a Blackberry they could "strongly suggest" to RIM that they include it. Funny thing is...I agree with him. He is a bit abrasive with his opinion and if one doesn't take a step back one may react to his "crippling" comments. Of course, we know that Verizon isn't going to disable the Wi-Fi if it is already in the phone. Why would they? The customer is going to pay for a data plan regardless. I personally would like to see Wi-Fi in a global device because it just makes sense to me. Yes, the Rev A network makes Wi-Fi redundant in the U.S. but how about elsewhere? Plus, it would eliminate a common objection.

I agree. I also believe that if Verizon truly wanted a Blackberry or anything else with WiFi enough, RIM or whatever manufacturer would get one for them. At a price.

However, assuming that we specifically requested it be cut out is asinine. I have little patience for people that assume what this original guy/gal was assuming.

The only phone I figure we asked to leave off WiFi was the XV6900 (notice we never did call it Touch). They must have made the model specific to Verizon.

Verizon doesn't need WiFi, technically. It makes a good gap filler - especially abroad - but with so few gaps domestically there's no overwhelming need for it.

Unfortunately, the master bedroom in my house is a 3G dead zone with my Voyager. VZW either needs to get WiFi widescale or get EVDO built into their femtocells. Maybe even BT on the femtocells for a data connection without being WiFi?

Hmmm. Wonder if I could turn the BT adapter on my laptop into a data bridge for my Voyager... to cover the lack of 3G in that one room. Pipe it off my DSL directly to the handset- would probably need a Blackberry without the crippled BT for that, though.

They just use that as a poor ass excuse because their is nothing else they can think of.. its pathetic really... If WIFI on a blackberry was the main reason why you left the king of cellular VERIZON for an inferior network then you need to get your head examined..Not saying you just making a observation... 😉 WIFI is put on those GSM phones here because their carriers network SUCKS and their 3G coverage is a joke at best.. 🤣
