Instead of Cutting Jobs, Verizon Cuts Incentives, Discounts on Phones
Written by Christopher Price on January 29, 2009
Verizon
Verizon Wireless next month will make drastic changes to two of their most popular programs, targeted at adding and retaining customers.

First, on February 15, Verizon will discontinue their 30 Day Test Drive program. The program allows customers to activate a new line of service, and have their voice charges refunded… if they elect to port out within the month to another provider. This was a key tactic that Verizon used to take advantage of Local Number Portability. However, no other carrier matched the offer, and facing high costs from an increased handset return rate, the company will end the program...

Did you even read the article? 🙄 Verizon isn't being affected by the economy. Verizon has record profits and was also able to acquire altell, not signs of a hurting company. This is just another example of verizon screwing their customers further! I'm pissed off about this, this was one of verizon biggest selling points and they just stripped it away.

I agree. I consider myself loyal to Verizon, but they are starting to pi$$ me off with their crap. Maybe Sprint WILL pull itself out of the toilet and maybe Big Red will sink. Greed has brought down every civilization and it somehow never fails....

You should be happy that you get a credit at all. No other carriers give you an EXTRA credit on top of your upgrade price. They also usually charge you an upgrade activation fee that Verizon doesn't charge on NE2 lines. Really nothing to complain about.

No it's something to complain about because it was one huge incentive to sign a new 2 year, and it set verzion apart from its competition. By putting an end to a huge incentive it tells customers that we are big and bad and you take what we give you.. while ATT has just lowered their data rates shows a lot about how they're thinking.

i'm pretty sure the will come up with something else and if you are nice to the rep he or she can always talk to her/his sup and try and get you a little bit more credit. yes it's not as sweet as before but it'll work. what would you rather lose a bit of a discount which in a long run if you bitch and moan and get verizon to credit you for late fees some misc fees etc you will get it back or have verizon lay off bunch of their reps have cs quality go down the drain and wait on hold 30 mins or more to speak to a rep. i personally value my time and hate to sit on hold a wait for rep more than min or so and verizon has been good about it (back in the day when i was with att/voice stream(tmobile)/sprint waits were upwards of 45 mins. from ta...

I actually like Verizons way of doing business because we're not going to lay off people, and instead we're going to cut costs in programs that may benefit the customer but are hurting our business too much to keep. Verizon is not a non profit organization, and they are here ot make money.

The New Every 2 is great, but in this day in age people still complain when you give them $100 off. I receive customers every day that get the credit, and still complain because th ephone is not free. I really like the fact that they are taking it away, and maybe people would be more appreciative. Although Verizon Wireless may have made a profit by sales, and new customers you have to think that behind the scenes there is more to it from a business ...

"Keep in mind, that existing customers prior to 2/15 will continue with the NEw Every 2 discount that they signed up for. Only new customers from that point on will have the NEW New Every 2 which won't actually take effect for another 2 years."
********************************************* **************************************
The way I understand it is that existing customers get ONE more new every two after this goes into effect, but beyond that they are also having their discount reduced. I've been with Verizon for about 8 years now and the new every two is like Christmas for me! In addition to excellent service I get to look forward to a new $100.00 discounted phone every 2 years. I know some people don't see it as a big deal but i...

yup and if anyone bothered to read other threads they would see this has NOTHING to do with verizon remaining a float and saving jobs 🙄 Verizon just keep screwing their customers further and further and reducing any incentive to stay with them. att, tmoible, sprint all offer way better incentives to be with them, everyone in here for the most part is just a brainwashed employee defending their all mighty employer. Makes me sick! saving jobs 🙄 You are not alone thousands of threads of pissed off customers

Sprint does that they just don't have a name for it. But most of their handsets have an extra instant or mail-in rebate, on top of the 2yr $150 discount.

Nothing turns around over night...but they are heading the right direction. Its just my opinion but I doubt they are going anywhere. There will always be people who aren't happy with at$t or verizon, no matter what the commercials say. And even verizon fanboys should hope Sprint stays around, imagine what verizon would charge if there weren't any competition.

If sprint didnt exist there would still be:

Prepaid (for minimal use customers)
ATT
Tmobil
US Cellular
Immix (and dozens of local carriers that are dirt cheap but offer poor national coverage)
Skype/VOIP phones that will become more popular as wifi hotspots increase.

Most verizon stores I've come in contact with don't even consider sprint competition (unless you are talking nextel business) Former sprint customers are some of the easiest sells I've done (besides local carriers like Immix) the only thing that will ruin the sale is a high deposit.

I wouldn't say "No other carriers give you an EXTRA credit on top of your upgrade price" because it's not true. 🙂

Little US Cellular gives the upgrade discount price after only 18 months, gives an EXTRA $20 off most phones if you are a renewing customer (Loyalty Program), and NEVER charges a renewal fee or an esn change fee for any reason for that matter.

I was shocked two months ago when I took my mother into a Verizon agent, and they charged her $17 to transfer her contacts from her old phone to her new one when she renewed. USCC does that for free.

Verizon kicks off a week of earnings calls by missing Wall Street's revenue projection:
-Digital Business Live

The carrier added 1.4 million customers in the fourth quarter. That's down sequentially from 2.1 million net total additions in the third quarter of 2008 and down from 2 million in the fourth quarter of 2007.
-Fierce Wireless

I could go on...

And -

It's because of the economy that VZW bought Alltel. They were grossly undervalued.

I love how people complain about getting something that is still more thn any other carrier gives you. Would you rather pay a few extra dollars for your phone or have VZW follow in the foot steps of Sprint and lay off a ton of people?

I perused the Sprint forum and it seems that most of the posts there are negative and general pissy.

I looked through the VZW forum, and generallly the posts are for info or general discussion...not much ill will around.

Just, IMO, a general indicator of Sprint's problem overall...

I'd hope people would be okay paying a small amount of extra money so that another person can keep their job to feed their kids and family. Besides customers have started to come and expect too much. When someones phone breaks and they dont got insurance and just signed a new contract 2 months ago they expect a free phone. Be happy that Verizon has been giving out these extra discounts for as long as they have.

Oh and I know when a customer comes in my store screaming and yelling I am alot less likely to go out of my way to get approval for something then if they just simply come up and say politely "Is there anything you can do to help me out?" Courtesy will go a long way and i guarantee if you do even corporate reps will bend prices...

They've beens screwing us for years. Each season the phones they release are junkier and junkier, often with worse battery life.

Someone in this thread said something about "loyaly." Loyalty? To a frickin' corporation that cares not one whiff about you other than getting its monthly payment? Hah! Save loyalty for your friends and family. I'm stuck with Verizon because it's the only viable option where I live. But trust me, if another company offered a better deal (and functinal service where I live) I'd move in a second.

coming from a person that uses Verizon because it works where others don't...

It sounds like no one else is capable of delivering like Verizon.

Or you can go with a different carrier, pay less, and get sub-standard service. You really do get what you pay for.

A comparison with at&t's Upgrade Advantage program

http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/why/upgrade-advant ... »

$69.98 and under: Standard Discount at 20 months

$69.99 - $99.98: Standard Discount at 18 months, $50 extra off at 24 months

$99.99 and higher: $50 extra off at 18 months, $100 extra off at 24 months

So unless you have one of those old $70 primary lines for a 1000 minute family plan, you're not better off with at&t even with the new new every 2 program.

The only people better off with at&t are those who have $99.99 or higher plans between months 18-20 and 24 and onward

You can count it if you get on an email&web plan. Since it is not a default plan, you most likely wont get it when you sign up. You can get it though, and then it is part of the plan.

Sprint calls their upgrade discount $150 but it seems to me that its the same $150 discount that a customer gets when they sign a new contract.

Unless someone can show me otherwise, Sprint gives no advantage to upgrades over new activations

I guess the arguement here for VZW is - "why give away the farm when your competition isn't?"

Looking at the competitive analysis in regards to customer retention programs, it seems like VZW's reductions is marginally better than the rest of the competition. Although it may be marginal, it is better and the overall customer public will respond to whatever is #1, whether the difference of benifits between #1 and #2 is an inch or a mile.

So why give away so much when you can give away just a little and maintain the same overall customer response?

There are a very few cases where at&t gives the better deal now. I guess VZW wanted to give them a chance. 😛
