Question about new "No Roaming" AC Plan

KLFloyd

I had some time to kill so I called VZ customer service yesterday to inquire about the new No Roaming plans. I just changed my plan a month ago so I was already on the AC 450 for $39, but I changed over a few weeks early to get the no roaming plan.

I asked the rep exactly what the difference was between the "old" and "new" plans because when I pulled up the coverage map nothing appeared to have changed. The rep told me that there was no difference in coverage, the difference was in your roaming lists. On the "old" plan (the one I'm on) if you're roaming your phone will indicate it is roaming and you'll be charged the $0.69 a minute. On the "new" plan, if your roaming your phone will simply say "no service" and you won't be able to make an...

And why does this surprise you?

Verizon is chasing CIngular's tail and deception seems to be the rule of business from the crippled BT to the ne NO ROAMING! plans.

The midnight oil is burning at Verizon HQ...that recent drop in ARPU shook the tree a bit.

I cabn hear them up there now

"Ok gentlemen, We did not see this coming...Jeeeze Doen't anyone read Consumer Reopots any more?

OK so we change our family plans and take a hit there..We will make it up with the Data sales in the BT phone many were waiting for..ah BOB you made that call to MOto about the clip on the file transfer right?"

Yes sir...No one will know. Our customers are lemmings...its VErizon after all.

"Good work Bob"

Now we have to change the In Network...

Actually, there is a big difference between the new map and old map with roaming. Check the states: TX, OK, CA, NV and others... Sorry Cingy guy. Your company is great no doubt, but VZ is better =)

this isn't true, and as much as i love kingfrog's interpretation of vzw toppling society with the bluetooth block, i should probably let you know both he (and the rep you were speaking to) are wrong.

i don't have the info in front of me about the rest of the country, but vzw added 17 SID's in the west area alone to this new calling plan.

you're not going to notice a HUGE difference in the calling plan because frankly there aren't a lot of places your phone will roam in the first place. VZW has what I'll call some "trouble areas" where you will get roaming charges if you get close to. (Mountainview, WY, St George, UT, Billings, MT, etc) the three i mentioned (along with several other "trouble areas" are now part of VZW extended cover...

Lance is the man--never have to correct that cat.

Basically:

1. some of the old roaming areas now say no service
2. some of the old roaming areas now say extended network
3.some of the old extended areas are now VZW service.

This new calling plan covers 99 out of the top 100 MSAs.

Does this make sense to anyone? Basically in order to use the slogan "no roaming" Verizon is flat out not allowing their customers who are in a roaming area to place a call where they would have been able to before at the roaming rate. Did the Rep. tell me wrong or is this true? If so, it doesn’t make sense to me that anyone who is on the new plan will actually have LESS coverage than anyone on the old plan?

Can anyone from Verizon confirm?

If this is true... Sounds to me like VZW is doing more crippling to their phones. Bad Bad!

I think, if you have any question about new price plan you should call Customer Servise again. Don't listen to the stuff like "I've heard, that my cousin's sister's boyfriend's daughter was told..." BTW, LanceUppercut's answer is correct.

The replies given by Lance and schnozejt are correct. The VZW no roaming AC plans actually provide the largest coverage area of all carriers. Cingular has the largest M2M calling area based on subscribers - VZW has the largest calling area ... major difference. In addition, contrary to what anyone says, VZW "no roaming" works the same as any other carrier (ie. Cingular). If it is an area where the carrier (ie. vzw, cingular, att, etc ...) has no tower or affiliate agreement your handset will display no service. However, as previously stated, those instances will be few and far between with VZW.
