Verizon/Alltel merger question.

Hello all,

I cannot find any info on what is going to happen to Alltel's GSM footprint that they inherited from Western Wireless in 2005. Will Verizon keep it, or is some of the GSM footprint going to be divested as a part of the FCC's requirements to divest 100 markets?

Any info will be most helpful, thanks.

Only in areas where Verizon is keeping the Alltel network with GSM overlay will remain in place. Besides, they have to honor the roaming agreements as part of the merger. However, Verizon did mention that the GSM network won't be expanded any further than it already is, and there will be no 3G added to the GSM side. So does that mean that Verizon is going to have GSM phones as well as CDMA phones?

No, this means that Verizon will continue to offer GSM roaming to AT&T and T-Mobile, just as Alltel did.

Exactly. All the rural carriers do is whine and complain so basically, Verizon made every concession needed to push this deal through. They promised to honor all of Alltel's existing roaming pacts, including keeping the old Western Wireless network up and running. Face it. Verizon needs Alltel to cover those holes so that they can offer enhanced services in areas like Oklahoma, Nebraska, Arkansas etc...
