New Verizon Family Plan w/ Data

Anyone know if Verizon ever plans to come out with a Family plan to include data (like what Sprint has for $129). Both my wife and I have phones w/ data and I need to start cutting costs on things considering I may be out a job soon with all my company's pending layoffs. I prefer to have Verizon's premium quality service, but have to consider switching to sprint to save $50 more a month and get more features bundled in with the data plan. I am interested in upgrading to the Touch Diamond Pro and I know VZ will have it in Dec most likely. But to spend $600 more per year on service, I need to re-evaluate my priority of whats important to me now. I really like Verizon's service, but I wish they would be a little more competitive in price rathe...

Verizon is not going to offer any price plan like that. I think you already know that. If sprint works well in your area then a port to cut monthly expenses can be worth it. If it was me I would look at cutting expenses elsewhere. I don't know if you still have a land line, but for me cell service is just to important to go with a company like sprint. They are losing millions of customers, and come Nov 7 we can expect them to lose another million...that isn't worth saving fifty bucks to be with a company like that. I use Nextel but only for work purposes, sprint killed Nextel will all their bs. I use verizon as my primary service and would never consider sprint ever again. Good luck with your choice.

I have a family plan $90/mo and a data plan on each phone (Moto q and Sammy i760). I do text a few times a day (not a lot). Fortunately I have the SMS2000 text plan for each phone which allows me 2000 free text messages per month and costs me nothing. I also have a tethering data plan for the Moto Q (which I will probably get rid of) for $15/mo. And Insurance on my i760 (which I may get rid of) $5/mo. So I am looking at $200/mo not inc bogus taxes. I use wifirouter on my i760 so I dont need data tethering on that and my wife's next phone may be the Diamond Touch so she can use WifiRouter as well and skip the tethering plan.

I just wish VZ had a Family phone/data plan like Sprint. I would pay $149 easily for that and save $30 (yet pay $20...

If you're going to re-evaulate your spending, maybe the data could be dropped. If both you and your wife have data plans and maybe you don't exactly NEED the data, you can cut $60 right there.
There may also be some reviews to your texting plans, if you have them, that could be made to save you $5-$10 a month.

The Sprint:VZW to Honda:Acura analogy is pretty close, VZW is certainly the Acura here, but in switching to Honda, you're sticking with the same company. Porting to Sprint is like making the switch from Acura to Ford. Ew.

We both need the data plans for email and web on Moto Q and Sam i760. We both get 2000 texts for free each month. Only fat to trim is the insurance on the i760 (none on Q) and the tethering plan.

But in all honesty, Verizon needs to come down on pricing in this time of recession.

You want vzw to change their prices to fit your needs? Just like any other business, they are trying to make a profit. Your job is to find a plan that will fit your needs and budget. You should not expect a company to lower their prices to fit your needs.

Why do you need the data-required phones? The free texting is a pretty good deal in itself too.
I'd say get rid of the smartphones and get something else. If you really feel you may be out of a job in the future, the data won't be as much of a necessity.

Verizon can't just lower their prices because some folks are in a pinch. More than just you is in a rough time due to this economy, so toss that idea out.
If you need to switch to Sprint, do it, but you're not going to get nearly the network that VZW offers to you.

Manipulate your own plan before jumping ship, lots of things can be done.

Nobody "needs" to have email and the internet on their cell phones. And if you do "need" it for your work, then your work should be subsidizing or paying entirely for the phone. This country may soon find out what is really "needed" in this life and what is not.

Why should they come down in pricing?

The reason they are "More" than carriers like sprint is because their network is more reliable and covers a much broader area. That stuff takes a lot of money to maintain.

Cell service really is "You get what you pay for." Local carriers have insane unlimited 'everything' plans for 79.99 or less, but the their service is crappy, their phones out of date, and their network is so small that if you go outside your town you'll have no service to you'll be paying for insane overage charges.

If verizon "comes down in price" it will be with new lower service plans with less items. If you want data tacked on, that requires the strongest network and the broadest coverage. that comes at a premium.

I feel your pain, man.

It's a tough decision. I have been a Sprint customer for 5 years and just switched to verizon. As far as service with Sprint, they certainly aren't a "ford"; at least not in my area. The service has been overall very dependable, customer service has improved a lot and they as well have some pro's as well with their con's. True, the "simply unlimited" plan with sprint is $99 per line, which beats the daylights out of $130 with vzw, and $129 v $160. Their data is lightning fast if you are in power vision markets too.

I am a college student and I work full time, too so cost is an issue to me, too. I also like to have my toys. In my situation, I was able to get a 15% work discount with verizon which about covers th...

I agree with the rest. You need to consider what is needed in your life, and what you don't need. Americans want their cake, and want to eat it to. It's coming to an end. Its time to be an adult, and realize blaming the company for their pricing is not the correct way to go about changing your life to live modestly. Read some political idealists, and maybe that will set you straight.
