I searched the site, but most of the posts related to this seem to be from before Verizon said something about using non-verizon phones. Well, that's what I understand "Any apps, any device" to mean, but I'm not really sure it does.

Does it?

Here's what I wanna know... can I buy a CDMA phone, from ebay or craigslist or other, and have it work on Verizon?

And/or, if I have an old/used Blackberry that was on Verizon but is now out of contract (someone else's contract), can I use that phone on my contract? If so, would I need a data plan ('cause I don't need one)?

Before some of y'all go on about why it's useless to have a blackberry sans data, it's not useless for me.

Basically, I want a small, light, barphone- which Verizon d...

You use to be able to. I currently have a non-vzw but my account says my phone type is "grandfathered". If you look at thier plans it says something like "running verizon software" under phone types. I think it will change in the future. I thought I read they will be switching to sim technology by 2013 (but don't quote me on it) because they are suppose to adopt LTE as their 4G speed or something like that.

I'm not gonna touch the ebay phone questions, because I've seen it both ways...

As for the Blackberry question, the former VZW Blackberry should have no problem being activated, but it REQUIRES the Blackberry service, at least the $29.99 plan.

Maybe try the new Samsung Slider (Sway) or ebay an old Nokia 6235i.

Thanks for the info. This is to all to replace an almost 3 year old Nokia 6236i, so you're suggestion is pretty spot on. I do love the phone but would like a better camera while keeping the bar phone format.

Also, it doesn't have the Verizon OS, so it's not crippled by it.

Again, thanks.

You just have to manually program them.

is that hard to do?

I was gonna do that, but sort of in reverse. My gf has alltel and I have a spare LG Chocolate that she wanted to use with alltel, but I wasnt sure if it would work.

That sounds very hopeful. What is the process of manually programming an Alltell phone to work on VZW's network?

Thanks,

Depends on the phone. Like with some of the older LGs Menu 00000 works. This is all stuff you can find online.

You should probably also look into finding out how to load a verizon PRL into the phone otherwise your service isn't going to be up to verizon standards.

Any CDMA phone that Verizon already carries an equivalent model can be activated on the Verizon network, ie an Alltel V3m (although a V3a will NOT work) or a Western Wireless Audiovox 8900, etc. The trick is that the ESN must be in the DMD already for it to be activated on Verizon and for the most part any model that Verizon carries along with another carrier will generally work, however, the data features won't work without some in-depth firmware hacking so get ready to roll up your sleaves.
