Hope this is true.No more roaming charges after
the 21'st. Of course we will have to sign a
new contract and be on the A.C. plan. But
I'd be happy as I go to the U.P. a lot.

Will this plan actually creat areas where service isn't availale? I know that the AC plan usually uses Verizon/Alltel/Sprint pcs networks. Will the plan cover you if you end up on Billy bob cellular in Kentucky or somewhere or will it just limit the networks we can use?

If in fact Verizon does this it will most likely work in this fashion. Your phone will either work or it won't. If you are in an area where there are no "roaming partners" then your phone will show no service. I believe this is the way Cingular's system works.

Basically unless you are on a Verizon system or a system where a roaming agreement exists between Verizon and the local cellular company you will not have any service.

I don't imagine there will be any need to reup your contract either as this can be taken care of via a PRL update.

I have seem the new map that goes in effect 2/21/05. I think it is just another step in the evolution of the AC plan. They may be upgrading a few carriers to "Preferred", but the big change appears to be in the addition of a bunch of areas where the carrier is upgraded from "Roam" to "Extended", but not for Unlimited and "IN" minutes.

There are still plain old roaming areas. Since it just appears to be an improvement in AC coverage, a new contract may not be necessary.

And if this is so, Verizon has probably already made this change in their billing computers.

I have no inside info, just an educated guess.

Can someone explain the difference in the AC plan and the National Single Rate plan? I thought the AC plan included roaming and was practically identical to Single Rate, but I haven't been a Verizion customer in a couple of years and am not up on all the specifics. (Have been on Sprint PCS). I was previously on the Single Rate plan, which was great, but I recall being told when I moved from Colorado to New Mexico that it wasn't available in NM. VZW went ahead and let me stay on the Single Rate plan as a courtesy, but it doesn't show up when I put in my zip code for service plans in NM.

America's Choice : Covers 90% of the populated U.S., may incurr roaming fees were applicable.

National Single Rate: Covers 90% of the populated U.S., may incurr roaming were applicable, but will not be charged roaming fees.

Hope that helps. 😁

The only catch to that is that if you're in an area not serviced either by Verizon or a roaming partner, your phone will not work at all. Nice not to have to worry about the cost, sure, but in an emergency you might want to have the option to use the phone, even if it does mean 0.69 per minute. The phones DO have those roaming indicators that let you know either way, after all!

ANY phone that either activated or not can make a 911 call 😁

not all calls need to be directed thru 911. What some people consider emergencies, law enforcement officials don't, and if the person is willing to spend the 69 cents a minute for a call, that should be their right. I sure hope they don't make it a system where your phone will work, or it wont, if they do that, they can discard the selling point of using in emergencies where phones are not available. Yes, you can make 911 calls either way, but, I can do that with a phone that is not activated and not have to pay a monthly charge for it, old cell phones are a penney a dozen now....

We have gained a decent amount of digital coverage where analog service used to only be offered, but in the deserts and rural areas, roaming coverage will continue to be the best economical solution.

We do still offer SingleRate plans however. With those, you will never be charged for roaming, unless your in Mexico of course. 🙂

I highly doubt that is true because it would not allow us to advertise free roaming considering about 70% of our phones are 'all-digital' handsets, hence, they would not work in those areas regardless. We would need a 'tri-mode' free roaming map, and an 'all-digital' free roaming map. Wouldn't be logical.
