Upgrading: WIFI Phone Without Data Plan?

slp

Mar 27, 2008, 12:06 PM
I'm due for an upgrade and I was wondering what is the "best" phone with WIFI. Also, is it possible to get such a phone (smart phone?) without a data plan? I just want to be able to check emails and web occasionally at home, school, etc. when I don't have a laptop with me. Is it even possible to use WIFI free of charge from VZN?

Thanks.

would you be able to get this phone without upgrading to a data plan? i am on a family share plan and wouldn't be able to upgrade it. i would only want to use the wifi, not get e-mails and such over the vzw network.

yes at most location, many direct stores however may require you to have it. Long story short, the store may require it but Verizon does not. I suggest getting the data pack when you sign up(you will get an extra discount for adding the pack) then just drop it later by calling customer care

Little FYI, if you get the Advanced Data Discount ($100) for adding the unlimited data package with your phone and remove the data package within 6 months of getting the phone you are supposed to be charged back the $100 discount you recieved. I know this is what they (online/cor stores) used to do and I believe they still do. Some indirects will do it too.

Well, the thin is that I don't want the data plan. I just want to be able to use the WIFI without having to pay for it. Any other suggestions is appreciated.

In order to guarantee no data charges on the device, you would have to request a "data block" on your line. This is NOT the same as Verizon's default pay-as-you-go data program, it's a hard block on data network access.

An unfortunate side effect is that you will not be able to send/recieve pix messages. Text will work fine, but no photos or videos.

If you do not have the block added, the phone will automatically ping for the CDMA network and the Wi-Fi connection each time you attempt a data session, even if you only want the Wi-Fi. It could add up to a few dollars a month if you don't add the block.

ah bro. All he has to do is change a few settings in his phone for the "dial up". Turn wifi on and browse all you want without data charges! OP just wouldn't get the extra bones off the joint. He would pay the 2yr or 1yr straight up...

The block can't be done in the "Call Features"? I'm already paying for the unlimited text/pic, so I will be using that, so blocking data that would block text/pic isn't an option. But if it's doable on the phone itself, then I would prefer that.

crazyeagle, what do you mean by paying the 2yr straight up? Pay for the 2yr contract all at once?

It means you won't get the "Advanced Device" discount, which is a mail in rebate, usually $50 or $100.
