Blackberry vs. PDA

Why would someone want a PDA vs. a Blackberry when the Blackberry unlimited data plan is $29.99 and the PDA is $44.99?

I'm in the market for a phone to check email, access the web and if necessary, tether to a PC. Over the two year contract that adds up to a savings of $360 going the Blackberry route. It appears all the cool Google applications work on both. I'm I missing anything?

Thanks

Yeah, you're missing something about both actually. If you're going to tether on the 29.99 blackberry plan, they'll charge you $30. $15 on the 44.99 plan. It's done this way so that the data on your phone plus the tether equals the price of a regular aircard (59.99)

As far as the data plan on the blackberry, 29.99 is for unlimited web and web-based email. The 44.99 blackberry plan will let you sync it with corporate email. i.e) outlook, lotus notes, etc etc.

The $29.99 does not include enterprise server capability, so on the Blackberry you are forced to manually sync with your desktop/outlook. The PDA's will do wireless sync which syncs with an internet site and you rarely will need to mess with cables and pc's.

Of course if you're tethering to a laptop, the data price is the same either way. And if you decide you don't need data after all you can remove the data pack on pda's but you can't on a Blackberry. I trust you're not tethering to a Mac. Ave speeds are about 400kbps-1.4Mbps download, 60-80kbps upload(although I clock 1Mb fairly often). Bluetooth vs cable connection is slower of course but livable if you need to. Aircards are faster but that's an extra line of service.

And of cour...

You seem very knowledgeable. I am considering buying a Blackberry or other smartphone available on Verizon. Which is the best model if I want to be able to have automatically pushed email from my Windows Small Business 2003 server, open and edit WordPerfect documents (using third party software if necessary), have a Qwerty keyboard, Bluetooth, voice dialing and speakerphone? Thanks.

Blackberry Enterprise Server(BES) is software that links a Blackberry with a Microsoft Exchange Server. It syncs wirelessly between outlook & the phone for calendar, contacts, and email. So if you get a Blackberry, you'll need that extra bit of software. Blackberry.com has a basic rundown and pricing, but most important is make sure your IT dept is up to it. VZW doesn't acutally support BES. It doesn't usually give too much trouble if you've got a good IT person, but it's one more bit of software to keep up and going.

Of the options, it depends on what you want. I am very fond of the 8830. It's a global phone, which may or may not matter to you, but what I like is that it has a nice keyboard. Flat buttons right on the front. The PDA'...

Also, you can do all of the above with a 'regular' phone. You don't need a PDA. Mobile web is one option, the Voyager has an HTML browser, so if you're price sensitive over time, $15/mo is even better than $30.

I prefer Windows Mobile Professional because it works like a computer. BlackBerrys don't, and their OS is trash (in my opinion).
