push to talk
I want to get a PTT but I don't want to wait for ever either. Sprints customer service sucks other wise I think I would switch to get there Ready link which is the same as ptt.
And yes, the network is going to be much better, though I won't go out on a limb to say more...

I have heard that LG VX4700 is supposed to be out in Feb and if that is true I would assume that maybe PTT will be out then also. I don't understand all the Hush Hush on stuff with verizon everyone knows they are going to have it why not let people know so they can make plans if your contract is up so they can get even more business or keep there current customers

The reason I'm a bit hush hush with what I know is because the 2 main people I get some information from are very hush hush with me about these things and don't know I post on this site (probably wouldn't be too happy). The information is proprietary and VzW is stern with its employees about releasing info.
Hell, my...

Thanks for the info Steve. I really am looking foward to the PTT with verizon. I stopped by Sprint and they offered me any 2 phones and to buy out my contract to switch I was tempted but there customer service really sucks.
There are people on these forums that might think you're crazy for turning down such a deal, but you know what? I think you'll be pleased with the VzW PTT and I don't know about the PTT, but the rumor mill sounds like cheaper pplans coming out for VzW on 1/17/05, but I won't say more. 😉

Are the carriers pushing it because it takes up only half the bandwith?

I don't see any benefit in PTT. Why do you want PTT? Or why should consumers want PTT?

Your first two questions sound like they should be posted in the Nextel forum. Ask a nextel customer why they want PTT. I don't personally, but some people really like it - probably because they don't use there minutes when walkie-talkying (if that's a word?).
As for your second question - I don't know if that in particular is the case, though it's an added benefit, I suppose. VzW in particualr really just wants to get into the niche market that is nextel customers. It's all about being competitive. And if you're a nextel custo...

I guess you stated my point. If you have free IN calling or Mobile to Mobile, Why do you want to go backwards and use the walkie talking(your word)? I thought it was started by Nextel to give free mobile to mobile type service at no cost.
I will say this about the walky-talkying stuff. What you say is possible. But you're missing something I'm not sure you're aware of. One of the big advantages of the feature is the group chatting. For example, if I'm the supervisor of a contracting company and I have 30 people in my group, I can call up the droup list of a certain type or all employees, then push that little button on the side of the phone and say to all of these employees at one time "get...

The other option we had was sure we had free in calling but that is a pain to have to call someone to see were they were located at when a simple PTT would beep them in a Second you have a connection to them and no interuptions.
i hope it comes soon. Sprint wanted my business so bad they offered me any 2 phones in the whole sprint collection for free to switch but I didn't.
Verizon will out do them in the Market
I do not want to see people use PTT the way you are describing. I don't want to listen to your personal walkie talkie conversation. Only one person can talk at once, The conversation takes longer and are much louder than a cell phone conversation.
I disagree with you that it takes longer to make a call. You are connected in a Second but the person still has to grab the phone and respond to you. Then after they answer the conversation will take longer waiting for each to push and release the button to talk. If you use the dialing features on your phone you can call people by pressing 2 buttons.
I understand the major benefit of talking with more than one phone at once...

I took a computer ethics class years ago that looked at how technology has effects on society. At this point I feel PTT is a technology that will have more harm than good, if use by consumers in public areas.
I wanted to know why people wanted PTT, and how they thought they might use it to see if I was missing something.
Thanks for your answer.
