Premium SMS Block Coming Soon

Below.Me

Jan 9, 2008, 3:56 PM
From what I have found out, Verizon customers will be able to pit a block on premium SMS starting Jan. 14. I know they tried to do this once before and it fell through......but here is to hoping they mean it this time.

This will block all premium sms only. Alll the other messaging will still work.

I personally believe most premium SMS companies are evil and should be shut down for preying on the Young kids with phones and the stupid people.

I am glad VZW is finally getting an option for customers to block them.

Yeah it is a feature that can be added. I am going to make sure that every custer I talk to knows about it and will try and persuade them in adding it. hooray for no more crediting for the darn things.

Side note, when the feature is added it will terminate all "opt out" premium SMS programs. There will be no credits or pro-rating for premium sms already billed the month you add it.

is "Premium" SMS not SPAM? sure seems so from the OP description.

not only should the "premium" SMS block be free, it should be the default state.

the only way you should ever receive "premium" SMS is if you opt-in in specifically and after being fully briefed in a non-BS non-marketroid manner by someone who does not stand to make money out of the deal.

That's a great theroy. But let's just say you buy your thirteen year old daughter a phone. She is watching MTV and sees an add to "find your love match by texting abcd to 1234 now!" or "Get the joke of the day and be a hit with all your friends by texting abcd to 1234!" So she does. Bam, you have a line on your phone subscribed to the service.

Most of the people I see with charged for premium texts are parents. Kids aren't going to take the time to read the fine print that says you ...

when you see the pop-ups asking you how many people you like, or that someone has a crush on you, and then asks to put your mobile # in, that's one example of premium messaging. They use your number to charge your wireless account $9.99 a month or more for "services" of sending you love tips, salad making tips, or what have you. it's illegal b/c the account holder has to OK all charges to the bill, yet the vast majority of premium SMS instances are young kids who are gullible and need friends.

This could be the result of a letter I wrote to Verizon about this issue.
Month's ago, I was apparently spammed by mobi.joke or, someone just put my phone number in one of those pop ups you mention.
The 'premium' SMS carrier sent me a text, that sort of indicated that I had to go to a website to accept the 9.99/month charges, but started sending their junk. (I never accepted nor went to their website)
I contacted an online VZW CS Supervisor who told me to reply "STOP", which, after doing such, the 'premium SMS carrier' "WAS ALLOWED TO ILLEGALLY AND FRADULENTLY USE VERIZON'S BILLING SYSTEM TO BILL ME FOR SOMETHING I HADN'T ORDERED." My emphasis as to some of the legal words I had to utilize. They billed me for the 9.99 about ...
