porting from TDMA

I plan to switch from AT&T TDMA to Verizon next month. How long will it take for my number to port? If it takes more than a couple of days, will I be able to use my current phone during this time?
Thanks

As long as nothing goes wrong, (aka, all the information you give VZW matches what is on your AT&T account) the port is done in like 15-30 mins. I have had ports finish while I am still on the phone with the customer after entering it. Sprint seems to give up numbers the fastest (I guess they have to be best at something, right?) I have had a Sprint number released within 5mins of entering the port request.

Your other phone will work until the port is complete. When it is done you will get a text message on your VZW phone advising you to call *228 and press 1 when prompted to program your phone to the ported number.

I know that's about how long it takes when you get it at the store. But he's buying it online. Isn't it a pain in the arse to get a port in done when you buy a phone online? ๐Ÿคจ ๐Ÿ˜•

Is there a special procedure used to port a number after the phone is recieved? Would I call verizon from a different phone and request the port before activating the new phone?
Thanks for all replys,

You can start a port online when you sart a new line of service. You have to give consent for the port. I don't know if you do it online or if it gives you the 800 # for the auto system. Your old phone will continue to work till you dial *228/1 to program the vzw phone. You have to have the old provider phone powered off before prgrm though. If you decide to start with a temp vzw # and call cust service for help, you need to call from another line...again have old phone off...and have vzw phone in hand to complete prgrm.

Have you considered purchasing the phone locally through a sales agent? We do appreciate those that appreciate having a local store front for personal service when you need help...

I have considered both purchase options. I thought that online ordering would be easier. I suppose it would be nice to at least test the phone out in person before buying it. Will my corporate discount work for in store purchase. Do I need to bring proof of employment?
Thanks
