ok, this may sound like a dumb question... so bare with me...

would it be possible to buy a helio wireless phone and activate it on verizon?

i notice that helio and verizon are both CDMA and both use 850/1900 and EVDO

any ideas?

Alltel is a different story altogether, im not sure about the details exactly but I think that since VZW and Alltel work so closely (roaming agreements and such) that they allow several models to be put on VZW, Like I said, im not sure of the reason why but that is the only carrier that it will work with.

very frustrating! i'm looking to potentially get the v9m but i am not going to deal with every cool feature disabled.

honestly, if i didnt have over a year contract left, i would dump verizon for AT&T

now that the gsm system is basically perfected.... verizon does NOT have the best service (at least in the tri-state area NY)

i think they should stop sitting on their laurels and wake up.

And how is gsm perfected? Did something happen in the last few years that i missed? And tri state? You don't get much better then verizon. They were the first carrier in the area! Back when nynex started!

um, i dunno wombough... cingular/ATT's service is on par with verizon here in NY. I have friends with cingular and like their commercials say "more bars in more places"

i'll have 1-2 bars and they will have a full signal. i got dropped calls and they dont. all of the people i know with cingular are completely happy. AND they dont cripple their phones.

SOOOOO, i think VZW should wake up and realize that they AREN'T the best out there and if they want to continue claiming they are the best, then they need to start getting more competitive.

examples:
-better phones that dont have every cool feature disabled
-rollover mins
-less expensive plans that offer more mins
-unlimited nights at 7 or 8pm and not 9

etc

then go to att! Stop complaining and go. I don't think they will miss you. You bitching does no good here on phonescoop. We have heard it all before. Go enjoy more bars and talking from a garbage can because that is what GSM sounds like to me.

I was a little short with that post. So here is facts for you since you threw some my way.

They are posting more adds every quarter then any other carrier. They have the lowest churn. So you my friend are in the minority. They must be appealing to the majority and you are not them.

That and Bell (in Canada)

Alltel and Bell are the only 2 CDMA carriers that you can use their phones on Verizon.

In theory, it can be done as long as the phone operates on the same bands (850/1900). Ampd phones can be activated on VZW's network and are easier to activate because they were VZW's MVNO. The ESN's are already in the device management database.

The difficult part is finding a rep who knows where the form is to have an ESN added to the device management database. You'll need your ESN, model, manufacturer, FCC Id, serial number (basically everything off the label on the back). The offline team will cross-reference with motorola to make sure it's e911 compliant (an FCC rule, just to be safe) and that it operates on VZW bands. Takes 5-10 days. Then, all you have to do is hope it'll program because that doesn't necessarily stop Helio from pu...

The Amp'd E816 (Hollywood) cannot be activated anymore. It has a PTT thing that pings the network and causes strain. So Verizon banned all E816 ESNs.

Not sure about other Amp'd phones. In the past, I know you could activate E816s.
