Coverage Question

I live in a small town in SE KY, Middlesboro, KY 40965. Cingular/AT&T has coverage for the whole town. Sprint even has digital coverage for the town. But, Verizon only has an analog signal. I currently have both AT&T and Verizon (my daughter lives with my ex-wife in an adjoining county in Virginia that has Verizon coverage). I would like to leave AT&T and renew my Verizon contract, but only if Verizon will be getting digital coverage in Middlesboro. The local Verizon reps have assured me for the past 15 months that digital coverage would begin in a few months. Naturally, it has not (although we had coverage in part of town for 1 day last summer). Is there any way to tell for sure when or if coverage will be coming? By the way, AT&T is...

By the way, AT&T is dropping many of my calls in the past few months - so much for their famous ads.

Yeah AT&T totally lies about having the fewest dropped calls. AT&T probably drops the most calls of any carrier. I totally hate AT&T. 👿

What phone are you currently using?

I currently have the Samsung Sync. This may sound weird, but the dropped call problem has become worse since the merger and exponentially worse since the iPhone debut. I have read that AT&T failed to invest to increase the data capacity of the network in anticipation of all the iPhone EDGE usage and that the network is overwhelmed. Whether that is true or not, dropped calls have become commonplace, and I actually have uniform coverage here with AT&T. Verizon has a far superior network based upon my experiences with the two carriers. Verizon has infrequent dropped calls and far superior voice quality. But, I need digital coverage in Middlesboro, where I am 90% of the time.

Why do you need digitial coverage? What Verizon phone do you have?

I have a Motorola that is tri-band. However, the analog signal only works in certain areas of my town and is of poor quality. Also, battery life is extremely short with the analog signal. Furthermore, there is no notification of voice mail messages until I cross the state line and enter digital coverage (I have had many complaints from callers that I did not respond to their voice mail messages when I had gotten no indication that they had been left.

Oh ok. I don't know what to tell you though. If they don't have digital coverage, they don't have digital coverage. There's no telling when they will.

Why can Sprint roam on Verizon, yet Verizon won't roam on Sprint? Sprint does have digital coverage here, but I really don't want them as my carrier.

Well, you can, but there is a drawback. I think if you make more than 60% of your calls while roaming, Verizon will terminate your service and charge you an Early Termination Fee of $175.

You are not roaming by default because you are still picking up a Verizon home signal, albeit analog. You can however set your phone to force roam. I can't give you step by step directions because I don't know what phone you have, but look in the manual or play around in the Network settings and see if you find the option.

Your on drugs if you think Verizon cancels you if you roam more the 60% of the time, VZW is one of the few that DOESNT cancel you if you do this, you can "roam" 100% of the time and be fine.

I have a Motorola v325 and a Motorola v3Razr. Do you know how I can force roaming on Sprint with these?

I can tell you tomorrow morning. I'm meeting a friend who has a RAZR and I'll play with it.
