I am thinking about switching from Verizon to Sprint because I want to get the treo 755p and I hear their data plan is cheaper. I like Verizon(good coverage, good customer service) so I am torn.

Does anyone have an opinion? Should I or shouldn't I?

Well, buddy, you are asking this in the Verizon forum. You are going to get biased responses. However, I am going to tell you that it would be a good idea to switch to Sprint. People may say that Sprint is having trouble financially, but seroiusly, nothing is going to happen. Sprint does offer much cheaper data rates, and for the most part a larger and stronger data network. Verizon limits your data to 4 GB per month when you choose unlimited. Sprint doesn't. Sprint is also rolling out their WiMax network which is theevolution of CDMA. Sprint's voice network is good too and you can roam from Verizon's network.

A big negative is Sprint customer service is pretty bad.

No, WiMax is the evolution of WiFi-type technologies. EVDO Rev C/UMB (UltraMobile Broadband) is the evolution of CDMA. Up to 280 Mbps (!)... faster than the WiMax deployments that are being talked about, should start deploying in a couple of years.

Sprint's voice network is good too and you can roam from Verizon's network.

But if there are Sprint towers in the area, you won't be roaming on Verizon's network, you'll be on Sprint's network... and that's a problem because the frequency Sprint uses (1900 MHz) doesn't penetrate buildings well. I know I used to be on Sprint's network.....

You can force sprint fones to roam, I realize it's not ideal, but in a pinch it works.

Yeah, but if you roam over 50% of your minutes, doesn't Sprint terminate your service and make you pay the ETF? I know they used to.

Even if they don't, it still seems kinda silly if one of Sprint's best features is that they can roam on Verizon's network. What the heck does that say about Sprint's network? 😳

Both verizon and sprint roam off each other, nothing new there.

Not exactly the same thing... I've heard several Sprint guys brag that they can roam off of VZW as a selling point. But I never hear anyone push "You can roam off of Sprint's network!" as a selling point for VZW. *shrug*

Sprint doesnt want you to roam on Verizon if they have towers in the same area. On Verizon's PRL... Sprint is Dead last... in fact you will probably get No Service before you will roam on a Sprint tower with a Verizon phone.

Sprint Will Cancel Service For CDMA Customers Who Roamed 50%+
Sprint will cancel the accounts of CDMA customers who "excessively" use roaming, starting March 15, 2007, according to a company document provided by an internal Sprint source.

Starting February 26, 2007, CDMA customers who roamed more than 50% during either November and December, or December and January (we're not quite sure which, sorr...

We don't know where the OP lives so this really doesn't matter, that chances of him being in roaming area over 50 percent is rather slim.

Maybe, but if you 'force roam' to VZW, as you suggested elsewhere, then you're more likely to put yourself over the 50 percent threshold if you're not careful... and get your service terminated. ☹️

To me, it's like, what's the point? If you're going through the trouble to force roam to VZW, then maybe you should just be on VZW.

Sure if that was the case then that would make sense.

Sprint phones do not force roam to VZW If you are in an area without sprint service u can set the phone to pick up the strongest signal it can find.

The only time this is even an issue is if u live out in the middle of the sticks.

as for the data, it works in allot of places that sprint does not have voice service. That is why they have a separate coverage map for the data

and before anyone blasts me for being biased.. I have the sprint 755 AND a Verizon moto. One for business and one for everyday use

Another thing you need to consider seriously is Spint has an all-PCS (1900 MHz) network which suffers with indoor reception. But yes the Treo 755p rocks and for fifteen bucks it's hard to beat. Also sprint allows streaming verizon does not. The GPS works great on the 755p too! Test drive it if you get full bars at home you're g2g!

Why not Test but don't port out till you are positive your Sprint Service works everywhere you want and then some, home, work, friends house, family's house... vacation spot, etc... WiMAX doesn't mean anything if you are getting a 755p and Verizon will launch that this month anyways....

I switched over two years ago and I am very happy. I live in Chicago and Sprint works much better than Verizon here. In building also is very good, depending on the building. I got no reception in buildings with my Verizon phone. Like everyone keeps saying try it for 30 days and then port out if it works for you.

Oh sorry... I just thought people use PDA for calls and data... not a GPS/Google. Very little care about Google Maps and those that do have the alternative... Sprint, atleast for now(See link below). I'm sure Verizon will launch it's Nav on it eventually anyways.
