Also, a text messaging question

While I have been comparison shopping for a new carrier, I've noticed that Verizon is the only one I have come across that charges you to receive text messages.... all of the rest only charge you to send. Does anyone know why?? 😕

As far as I know ATTWS (Cingular blue) was the only company not to charge for incoming text messages. I might be wrong cause I can't find a definite statement saying Cingular does charge.

I have U.S. Cellular right now, and they don't charge, either.

There's some folks on the Cingular forum who are stating that Cingular post-merger (i.e. 'new Cingular') will be charging for received text messages very soon. They sound like Cingy reps, but of course that can't be confirmed.

Because it's billable network traffic that your handset has to either tie up a Paging Channel (for a short message), or even tie up a Traffic Channel (for longer messages).

That part I understand, I just wasn't sure why Verizon was charging for it when it seems like no other carriers are.
