Can anyone help me figure out how to get a Sanyo 8200 working on Verizon? From everything I've been reading, it sounds like it's really possible.
I haven't bought the phone yet -- I'm trying to find a cheap used one to start with, and I'm trying to get some information on how to go about this in the meantime.
I know that I need an MSL. Once I have that, what do I need to do? I realise that I need to program the phone with Verizon information, I would need to active the ESN on my account (is that even going to work?), and I need to load Verizon's PRL onto the phone. But I don't really know / understand the specifics.
If anyone has done this, or if they have ANY information, I'd appreciate it!
(p.s. I posted this in the Sanyo forum...

get the msl, and then get the manual programming instructions. Manually program the phone, then do the *228 option 2 to update the tower list(prl). After that you should be OK.
...
I;m not sure what the Sanyo 8200 phone is. Is it a CDMA phone? If so, after you acquire the MSL, call VZW tech support and ask to make the ESN change. When they tell you it's done, dial *228, option 1. That will program the unit for you.
...
OTA won't work, since the MSL isn't in VZW's system... HW tech support shoudl be able to walk you through the manual programming. Only thing that OTA can do is PRL updates IIRC.

Yeah, its a CDMA.
My only concern with what you mentioned, is that I hear there is some sort of ESN list. Is Verizon going to accept the ESN I give them, even though its from a Sprint phone (whether I tell them that or not)?
...
Good Point... if it's not on Verizon's list of ESNs with GPS then it won't be activated.

Yeah, and see... I KNOW some people have activated Sprint phones on Verizon. But then I keep hearing that Verizon has a list of accepted ESNs. I can't seem to find out if there is anything special people have to do, for their ESN to be accepted.
...
They just started with this list in the past few months. They bascially told the agents that if we buy our phones from 3rd party dealers we need to verify that the ESN is on Verizon's list. If it isn't then we have to send a spreadsheet or something to get them added in to the system. I'm not sure about a customer with that problem.
...
I just found something else.
"Requests to load ESNs for CPE not found in DMD will not be completed." Basically that means requests for Customer Provided Equipment will not be done. Now that is basically saying that if a customer brings a phone in and wants to do an ESN change they will not allow me to do it. Not sure what would happen if the customer calls directly to Verizon.
It also says, "Agents should never contact Customer care, Activations or Customer Service to process changes for non-compliant ESNs."
...
One more thing... sorry for he multiple Posts!
"If a CPE has never been activated on the Verizon Wireless system, it will be denied access."
...

No problem, I appreciate all the information.
Now, it says it will be denied access... meaning, a rep -could- technically GRANT access, right? Except they're not supposed to, I imagine. But yeah. Maybe it's just a matter of getting someone on the phone who's willing to put it through for me.
...
Yeah, I'm not exactly sure. I'm with you though... if you called enough times you would probably get someone who would do it. I usually like that aspect of things. Call enough and you will get something done!
...
yeah, call up a few times, and even try a few different departments... try activations, then account maintence, then tech support, then try supervisors in all 3 departments... Somebody will be willing to live life on the edge. 🙂

I have heard something about, ah.... if you call Verizon enough times, you'll eventually get someone who either doesn't care and does the ESN change for you, or just someone who doesn't know what they're doing. That's kind of hit or miss.
Do you work for Verizon?
The one thing I hate about Verizon is that if you call them 5 times and ask the same question, you'll get 5 different answers. Heh. So many people seem to not know what they're doing. It's very very frustrating.
However... if it means I'll come up with someone to put through an ESN change, I'll take it.
...
Actually it will... I have a form sitting in front of me for ESN exceptions... We fill it out, fax it in, they give it a hairy eyeball, and fax it in somewhere else, and there those people call the manufacturer's unlisted level (insert somethign like avogrado's number her) tech line and verify that it's GPS, they sign off on it and fax it to the hardware demons... and now if the ESN is still readable (3 faxes) they add it to the exceptions query database and all is kosher... total time spent is 3-4 days at worst, 4 hrs at best...

Well, this is good to know. It sounds like it's just a matter of getting someone to start that process for me. Heh.

Okay -- as for getting the manual programming options, is that something I can just call Verizon and ask for?
I have been told that for the first time, to get the PRL, I need to use *22801, rather than *228. It has something to do with the fact that the phone is going to look for a Sprint tower rather than a Verizon tower, at first. I donno.
...
manual programming will fix that... it puts in the SID/NID pairs... the ones in it currently are sprint's SID/NID... you'll swap it with VZW's SID/NID and it'll hit a VZW tower... and *22891 is the option you can use to do the PRL update.

Awesome. Thank you!
For manual programming -- do I get that information from Verizon? Like... are they going to know what I need, if I call up to ask them to walk me through manually programming my phone?
...
You'll probly have to get it from Sprint. Or Radioshack, in the instruction manual section of their website they used to have the programing instructions for every phone they sold. Don't know if they still do or not, but it's worth a peek.

Well... I don't think getting a manual from Sprint is going to help me program it with Verizon information though, right? It would at least tell me where to go in the settings to find what I need, though.
...
wouldnt it be so much easier to just change a sim card?
...
kireiOct 29, 2004, 1:46 PM
It would, but this phone doesn't have a SIM card, and Verizon doesn't use SIM cards.
What it comes down to is, I found a Sprint phone I really like, and I'm still under contract with Verizon -- although I'd stick with Verizon anyway, because I'm so happy with the amount of coverage I get.
...
I think what he is trying to say is that if you were on a GSM system, you could just swap the sim cards but sence you are on CDMA you can't so you have to suffer through stuff like this. Kinda pokeing fun at the situation... At least thats how I took it.
...
kireiOct 29, 2004, 3:25 PM
Heh, probably. I certainly WISH it was as easy as swapping a SIM card. But I like Verizon too much to switch. I used to be on T-Mobile, and I hated it.

Why the Sanyo 8200? Looks like a "bleh" 😛 phone to me.
