That's a strange one.
You said that you get the hourglass when accessing the Get Going GIN menu, but that all other menus work fine.
Let's test whether you can actually access the data network on those other menus.
Pick a GIN menu other than Get Going, choose "Get New App" or the equivalent, and see if it gets you the catalog for that category. If the catalog comes up, then you're accessing our data network just fine.
At that point, if you still get an hourglass on one specific menu, and it will not go away, we're looking at an issue with the phone, as we've proved the network is ok. I had the same problem when I had my Samsung A950 expect I was trying to download Backup assistant and it did the same thing. I spent two hours on the phone with Tech support trying to get it fixed, by this time though Verizon had already replaced my phone 7 times and would not change me to a different model. So I ended up having to take it back to the store and they said they would give me another one for free, and I was like hell no. So I ended up buying a different phone at full price. Samsungs I guess are not what they used to be, at least I never had any problems on the GSM side but there is no way I am going back to AT&T(cingular).

Honestly, I'm very partial to LG. I own an LG8300 and it does everything I need and then some.

I just bought a Chocolate(mint) and I love it. Even though the phone I wanted was the vx8600. I bought the phone online, could I take it back to a store and switch it out for the vx8600 since the price has come down on it?

Other choices work like a champ.

Let me know how that works out.
Sorry if you have to lose your downloads and data, though.
