Does anyone think there will be a way to unlock this phones SIM? Sprint's version is unlocked but ofcourse verizons isnt. Hopefully someone will figure out a way to unlock verizons though.

Thanks

Maybe. I know Motorolas are easy to mod and hack but I don't know about RIM.

We'll see.

If it is labeled Sprint or Verizon there is no SIM card to unlock. They don't use one.

Besides, I have never heard of a BB 8830 that is Verizon labeled and I sell Verizon.

If the phone is locked and you can't get it unlocked to flash it. It has to stay with the provider that it is from.

There may be some online unlocking software that could be used but....

Good Luck in trying...

I work for Verizon, too. You should do some more research. The BB 8830 is a world-phone. So yes, there is a SIM card to unlock 😁

It doesn't come with a SIM, you have to get one with the Global Kit, $39.99 SIM and Calling card if you need Global Tech Support.

OK, does this mean the following.

1. $10 / month fee to VZW for borrowing their sim card?
2. Vodofone SIMs? Does that mean a European Vodafone sime can be used in the phone. They are not the cheapest when travelling, but it sure beats $1.49 / minute.

I suspect the answer to all the questions will the answer I dread...Its VZW after all

you obviously work for indirect if you haven't heard of the new BB. Global phone, and the sim is unlocked, you can use it where ever there are cdma networks and gsm networks. it will automatically connect to whichever is available at the time.

you obviously work for corporate because you are completely misinformed. The 8830 is a global phone with a sim card, but the sim(for verizon) is locked to vodafone sim cards and gsm will only work on non US bands of GSM(900/1800)

If I travel internationally, do I have to purchase a specific SIM card where I am travelling to?
Specifically will I have to ONLY purchase a Vodafone (900/1800)? and will I have to do something to the phone to allow it to work?
Thanks for any assistance or advice.

No Skip.
VZW has contracts with different carriers in other countries. The carrier information is preprogrammed in the VZW/Vodafone SIM card mentioned above...the one for 39.99 or free if you get global svcs. When you get to the other country you phone searches for CDMA, if it finds it, it connects to it...data or no data. If it doesn't find CDMA then it scans the list of carriers programmed on the SIM card and if it finds one it connects to it.
If you go with a VZW/Vodafone SIM card then you have to insert it correctly and make sure that you have the right services on your account.
If you get the SIM functionality unlocked then you can buy SIM cards from local non-US carriers and pay less for voice. Some food for thought:
1. You will ...

Dear Tech15,
Thanks SO much for a very quick, clear, and concise answer. It appears that if I want to keep getting the data, I should stay with the sim card that I would get with Verizon recognizing that I will be paying higher rates. Sound like the best course of action. Perhaps if I am in an international area for a while, it might be cheaper to pickup a cheap local phone if available.
Thanks again...
By the way, what is common sense? Haven't seen that used for a long time......

Ask the Bastard Sons of Dial-up. These guys are great. You may want to ask Hak5 as well. BSOD.com and Hak5.com. If the URL's don't work, Google them. I'm pretty sure they'd love the challenge. Hack-the-planet. 🤣

Hacking is not required.
All you have to do is call global phone support and ask them to unlock your phone. Make sure that you have the latest s/w and they'll give you the unlock code. Then you can use another non-US SIM. Only voice will work.

" but ofcourse verizons isnt " statements like this are getting pretty old now...

Also, your account has to be in good standing. Additionally, you must be a customer for at least 60 days before global support is to unlock the phone. 😉 For the record I am reciting policy whether I agree with it or not is one thing but what it is, is another. 🙂
