Does anyone know if Verizon is going to change their network to wCDMA GSM just wondering. It seems gsm has far better phones, battery life, speaker phone, bluetooth, more features...
...
Verizon Wireless will probably not change to gsm Anytime soon. CDMA 2000 is a more efecient network. Plus Their are even some eastern carriers are looking into the CDMA 2000 network as well.
...
with the new samsung coming out it looks like they are going for CDMA @ USA & GSM @ Rest of the World. You know just like we are with the "metric" and "standard" measurement systems... 🤣
...
verizon wont be switching since they are past that already, gsm from all looks will be a version of cdma in a few years.cdma is the best service.see how many problems gsm has,and it doesnt matter if it is att, cingular,or t-mobil,they all have problems with dropped calls,no service in service areas.phones not being able to keep signal.etc.cdma is here to stay if you want good service.
...
gsm on att doesn't have as many dropped calls as tdma because of the different system it is on...no service is because gsm is not everywhere yet just like tdma was not everywhere when they were going from analog to digital..u have to be patient..that is what the 30 day window is for to try the service in your area with att.
...
Yup... ATT has its work cut out with GSM. I signed up with ATT because I liked the Nokia 6800 phone. I was forced to return it a week later, coverage was abysmal... too bad, liked the phone.
...
a few phone manufacturers will be making GSM -CDMA phones so that the eventual leap to WCDMA will have them on par w/ the other national carriers but those phone will probably be on N.American GSM compatible not wiorld.but you never know. 😉
...
I think if the rumor that Verizon is "switching to gsm" is mulling around it stems from their affiliation with Vodafone. Perhaps because of the new Samsung quad mode which is being launched for Verizon that has CDMA and GSM capabilities? Is this where the confusion is coming from? This is not a transitional phone for Verizon to convert to GSM... It is the next logical step for the carriers to make the most of their networks and partnership... and since Nextel has had a global phone and global capabilities for many years the necessity for Verizon to compete in that arena is no different than PTT. And I agree with the "metric/SAE" analogy... So true.
...
VZW has three global phones already.
...
i think it would be great if all carriers were one technology so that every major carrier can benefit from roaming agreements. everyone wins, it will then force the carrier to compete more and will force customer service and your overall service quality thru the roof
...
what are you people smoking?
gsm works perfectly in europe just doesnt work well in US somehow.
...
Verizon in NOT switching to GSM.. Period! They are however coming out with a phone sometime with CDMA and GSM abilties, so that the phone can be used on Verizon's CDMA network in the states, and Vodaphone's GSM network over seas.
...
u have to wonder sometimes where people get their info from
...
Yeah I know.. GSM is a Sub Standard Technolgy. CDMA I believe will eventually become the standard becuase it is more effectient. It handles more calls per channel than GSM is is much faster than GSM.
...
that is why GSM is getting switched to EDGE to get the faster speed in a year or so.
...
It will still be slower than CDMA once the CDMA 3G Network has been fully upgraded.
...
also read this, its in the gloassary of phonescoop
cdma2000 will be deployed in at least three phases. The first, 1xRTT, supports up to 144 Kbps packet data speeds. (This is Were Sprint PCS, & Most of Verizon Wireless is at now, Still overall faster than GPRS)
The second release of 1x, 1xEV-DO, will support data rates up to 2.4 Mbps.(Verizon Wireless has this already in TWO markets, overal still faster than EDGE)
The third, 1xEV-DV, supports circuit and packet data rates up to 3-5 Mbps.(Were We will hopefully be by 2005, much Faster than EDGE)
A possible fourth phase is cdma2000 3x.
(If this is true, it will blow EDGE away)

January 2007 happy new year! GSM VERIZON!

ATT Wireless said:
Mmm. Pizza.
And a 2 liter of coke
...
Is there any possibility we could get some concrete proof of this, or even an article where this rumor is circulating?
...
Verizon is NOT switching to GSM, look at the date of the thread, its 3 years old
...
That is what I figured, wasn't paying enough attention for the thread date though. However, when idiotic posts go up like that, it pisses me off because it wastes space where I can actually LEARN something from others in the industry. So I just feel the need to ask for proof. Trust me, I am well aware Verizon would not switch...hell, I work for Sprint/Nextel and this merge thing has been a steaming pile of crap...so I did not take it seriously. However, I did want to see what they had to say in response. That is all.
...
That is quite possibly the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Here, let's spend billions of dollars to downgrade our network so that people can't really hear eachother when trying to communicate.
Oh by the way phones and networks have little to do with one another. Contracts, relationships, and freaking money have everything to do with it.
Hey guys, don't you think a pager is a better option then a cell phone? I heard all cell companies are going back to pagers. More reliable I guess.
...
ah 3 years old, how'd that come up?
...
(Even though I really doubt Vz will change to GSM) I feel it's very important for me to point out that in other (smaller) countries in South America. (where the networks are much smaller than in the US) e.i Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Venezuela just to name a few.. CDMA carriers are adopting the expenvise deployment of a paralell GSM platform too. Companies like Movistar (Spanish company investing millions of $$$) in these CDMA carriers in South America is making these carriers deploy a GSM network too. Will they eventually switch to GSM? I don't know. I do know that Movistar's goal is to make GSM the first choice for international roaming in South America (just like it is in Europe)
...
One more thing I forgot to mention is that these CDMA carriers had already deployed EV-DO throughout their networks. Now they are deploying these GSM/GPRS/EDGE networks by 2007... The word is to have them up and running for roaming capabilities, and eventually deploy UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA simultaneously by the end of 2007...
...
Thanks for the tip 🙄
...
HA HA HA! south america is dropping CDMA! I guess they're smarter than I thought. How about central america? will they be next? I think is funny how one technology overrules the other...
