Wireless Buddy

Feb 20, 2007, 7:15 PM
I am buying my Treo 650 tonight. When it arrives, how do I activate it. Call CS from my landline phone? Is there a fee for this? Do I do the *228... ?

Yesterday I went to Best Buy and bought a Jabra BT125 Bluetooth headset and a BodyGove case. I am so pumped 😈

Go to verizonwireless.com. click 'myaccount' and log in... or signup, THEN log in... go to 'my phone' section and click upgrade. youll see the option for using your own device. click it and follow the prompts. THEN DIAL *22899 SEND. this version is developed for data devices. Do not dial plain *228 and optin one, even if a care or tech rep tells you to.

this process gets your phone active for phone calls, text andpix messages, and internet access. It does NOT set up your email with your office using active sync or wireless sync. there are seperate things at work there. call 800920204 from a landline and ask for wireless data tech support. they are trained to help you use the features of data devices.

best of luck, tell us how it goes.

2 things that I find very important:

- runs Palm OS unlike those crappy windows PDAs coming out

- has the keyboard on the front like a BlackBerry. I don't know why, but I really don't like sliding keyboards.

you could not be anymore wrong! 99 is for data only devices, no voice! ie pc-card, treo with no voice service, berry with no voice service, a tethering only set-up, etc. He was 100% clear in saying he not getting a data plan, so why detail data only steps!?!?! please do not toss out instructions you yourself do not understand clearly or k...

Same here. It does the exact same thing. The only difference is that you don't have to hit the 1, it just starts programming automatically.

lordobento and voiceoflogic: I build the OTA platform for Verizon and I maintenance switches in my area. I am a ten year veteran in network technologies. You two, could not be more misinformed. *22899 as well as *22890 were developed for aircards, true, becaue aircards cannot dial the option numbers for regular ota. But that is only 1 of the 2 reasons it was developed. the other reason is because of when the 1X network came out and getitnow launched, there was a need to auto download the dmu key as part of the ota process. *228, option 1 downloads the PRL, MDN, and unlocks th...

I'm just going on what Infomanager/NE Area CS says, the Different between *228 and *22899 was written and advise to all reps which one to use. Now if this is incorrect, perhaps a Feedback form should be sent to the people who put the message on infomanager so we can properly advise customers. I for one would love to be able to reset a DMU as I come across issues where it needs to be reset once a week.

I admit that i am a bit of a rogue tech, but facts are facts. You are correct that info manager states the ota info as you described it. And believe me, I have pushed relentlessly to have the info updated. I continually get resistance because everyone seems to think that their training was right and they take the assertion that they have outdated info as a personal attack.

I dont get it. you dial 6 digits with no options to remember, it programs the phone, it works for prl updates, it assures data network alignment for all data features, and it doesnt adversely affect phones that dont use a dmu key (pre- getitnow). Its easier and less to think about, why doesnt VZW make it standard procedure? I still havent gotten a good answer ye...

Everything you're saying is so true. If it works, it works. Why bother with activating any other way when *22899 does everything. Dial that number and set the phone down. In less than 2 minutes the programming is done.
What part of this doesn't make sense?

ok so going by what everyone is saying, I do *22899 and it will get my Treo programmed AFTER I call CS and have them switch the 650 to my number. If this makes any difference, the Treo im buying is a refurbished model.

I will not be using data, and I don't want to be charged for data. Are you sure *22899 won't add some sort of freaky data thing and charge me a lot of money?

PS: When I first got my Audiovox 8910 in July 2005, i did plain *228 and it automatically programmed my phone. No other steps.

No sir, the method of over-the-air programming (ota) does not affect what features you pay for on the account. that is decided when you call in the activation and the care rep changes the serial number on the account. However, I frquently encourage customers to confirm their account status, features, etc whenever they feel they need reasurance. Its always a good idea to get cozy with accessing your acount online so you can do a printscreen and save it to a word file in case you ever need to prove what you signed up for.

The DMU key is an extremely technical piece of data that most verizon employees dont know about. most dont need to know, honestly. It stands for data mobile user. To put it in laymans terms, its the password to unlock a mathematical algorhythm that authenticates a given phone to the verizon network and allows it to make data transactions such as access the web, download games and ringtones, or send pix and text messages.

The dmu key is randomly generated at the network level and syncronized to the device after activation when the customer first accesses a data feature. This access is not needed if the phone is programmed at the point of sale by dialing *22899. Thats what this whole thread got started about. I told the author of the ...
