Nokia, Sprint Nextel, and Qualcomm have scheduled a press conference for next Wednesday. This press conference will be run by the CDG (CDMA Development Group), the consortium for the CDMA platform. The combination of Nokia and Qualcomm, alongside the nation's only WiMAX and CDMA-committed carrier (Sprint Nextel) is certainly a sign of changes ahead. Sarin (Vodaphone's CEO) also took a dig at Sprint Nextel Corp., which last year announced plans to launch a WiMAX network beginning later this year.
‘Sprint Nextel has a CDMA2000 1x and iDEN network, so it appears they like to have several networks running in parallel. I don’t understand the logic, maybe someone could explain it to me,” Sarin said in response to a question regarding WiMAX’s progress, adding that CDMA was a great technology, but as become a “niche” technology in the 2G world.

Based on the way I'm reading this story, if they're going to be back to making CDMA phones, and not have Pantech rebadged phones as their future lineup, then I wonder if they might become a Sprint exclusive, or if they'll try and also make phones for Verizon Wireless too. My mother wants to continue owning Nokia phones, simply because she's more familiar with their phones.
Now if Nokia becomes a Sprint exclusive, then I hope Sanyo will eventually become part of the Verizon Wireless lineup when that exclusive contract runs out, if that contract hasn't already been renewed.
