Legal or Not? Sue or Not? Either way I was let down by VZW

(third party did not have a password for my account) A Verizon Rep got into my account at the request from a third party that has no relationship to me or authorization and the Rep released phone calls made by me and times and numbers being called to the third party that requested this information. I found out with in minutes that this had happened. I called Verizon. Verizon did tell me that a Rep by the name of *$%) did look into my account and they did see the party that requested the information from him. It is under investigation and the rep has been spoken too. Obviously caused me alot of grief beyond imagination. Seems like that is wrong of Verizon to allow this to happen. Any input?

Half the story? That pretty much sums it up. I can just about guess the rest. It was probably his wife/girlfriend who requested this info only to find out he was calling another women, therefore causing all the greef.

To give your personal information to someone that does not have authorization seems very wrong. WOW shame on that Rep. Should be fired! And you should Sue. I would be pissed!

I worked in customer service for a credit card company years ago. One thing that we were told is that we cannot question whether the person we are talking to is the actual cardholder or not. In other words, someone calls in and says they are John Smith and the account is John Smith and they have all the information verified, then I have to give out anything I can legally give out.

Here is an example. Customer is married. Customer splits up with spouse. Ex knows customer's info. Ex has new boyfriend/girlfriend, or just a friend of same gender call in pretending to be customer. Rep gives out information. Rep did nothing wrong. Rep was defrauded by ex...

That info can't be given over the phone, at all. Even if the person on the other end claims that it is the account holder. Reason: It gives a red flag that it is not the account holder who is calling.

If someone has your personal information then they could easily access your account. If you don't want this to happen again then put a password on the account and don't give it out to anyone.

Its criminal under Federal law and many State laws for someone claiming to be you to get your phone records without a search warrant. There have been some high profile legal cases recently that involved that practise by private investigators. In California, it is also illegal for the phone company to release those records to anyone else knowingly. Hire an attorney. You may have a lawsuit against VZ since they are legally responsible for the actions of their employees on the job. You could also sue the person that got the records, but its probably someone you don't want to file lawsuit against if you found out about it that quickly.

Ummm...how could VZW be liable for giving out info to someone that was impersonating the customer?

It's not impossible, but I have several issues with the events as they happened.

First, a third party should not be able to request your info unless they call pretending to be you. If that is the case, then fraud was perpetrated against Verizon.

Second, the name of the rep who gave the information would not normally be released to you.

Third, call information is restricted and they would normally refer a customer to my account online or order a bill sent to the billing address. Information is not given out over the phone.

So, while I can't rule out the story as it stands completely, the odds say there is more to this than originally posted.

Ok....heres the deal. The reason I know the Reps name is because the person that got the information and slammed me with it and others. Told me the Reps name was blablabl and he gave this information to them. This person did not pretend to be me just said some BS story and lots of pleases and sure enough it work. They had no password. This person hardly knows me and the password was of a latin name for a specific insect found only in Madagascar. This Rep also said give me some time and I might be able to get you some more records. He was only looking up specific dates for this person. When I found out. I was upset called Verizon gave them the information. They looked into when my account was accessed and by which Rep. I also gave the verizon...

HAHAHAHA This just reminded me of SNL Celebrity Jeopardy.

Sean Connery, "I'll take the rapist for 400 Trabeck"

Alex, "It's not 'the rapist', it is Therapist"

LOL

I liked:

Connery: "I'll take the penis mightier for 600"

Trabeck: "Umm, that would be the pen is mightier"

Conner: "oh, well i've been trying to come up with a penis mightier... failing to do so has been my greatest failure..."

I think have every one of the ones with Connery on my computer!

I think thats the point. Even with power of attorney the best they could do is reprint a bill and send it to the on account billing address. I just had a customer the other day trying to get info from her husbands account. She had Power of Attorney. Even with the PoA we had to puther through to CC and have her submit for a bill reprint.
