WHY?!

It is infuriating that I have to have the data package with my Blackberry phone. I like the way that it texts, I like to make calls with it. I don't need picture messaging and I don't need the mobile web! I have used the phone without the package until U.S. Cellular got bent and started checking out phones that didn't have the data package. It worked fine. I called U.S. Cellular customer service and they fed me some line about how the phone would not function properly without the service, but I'm pretty sure they made that up because they had no direct answer to give me when I asked them why I must have it. The phone functioned properly without the package, they're full of it. Just another way to make money, as if they're not reeling ...

All networks require a data package on all smartphones. Any carrier you go to, will tell you that the mobile web is a required add-on for any Blackberry/Windows Mobile smart phone. AT&T charged $29.99 for theirs, so your actually saving $5. If you want a phone with a keyboard without the data, go with the UX260 or Moto Hint (coming later this month).

But I already have the blackberry, and got it without the data package. I don't have the money to get a new phone and don't want to when I already have one. Even if all other carriers require this I think it's bs.

AT&T doesen't require a data package on their blackberrys or smartphones. You can add a message package to text but of course without a data plan you can't MMS. If I were you I'd shop around.

True, ATT is the only carrier now. Without data required. It will change soon. Most of the time, blackberry phone ping to BB, to know that the phone is working. Customer that don't have data, some of the time have issue with their phone. So, most carriers make customer have data on the phone. Making it less promatic with issue on their phone.

And blackberrys ARE DATA PHONES! Not, voice and text only phones. Makes sense. It is like buy a computer, without the software. How are you going to use the device without the software. I believe that people need to pick phones that fit their needs. Not, what popular.

I agree 100% geoslay....also return rates are extremly high when companies allow people to get smartphones without data...thats because the person realizes that the phone isnt that great without data...

Three points:
It's not going to change with AT&T. AT&T will let anyone get a BB or Smartphone without a data package, but no mail in rebate or iPhone. I've heard T-Mobile has the same situation. As far as a Blackberry specific ping goes, all communication between the device and RIM servers goes through specific internet ports. The Blackberry uses a different internet protocol than other cell phones that prevent it from obtaining an internet connection unless it goes through RIM (without modification). If you don't have a data package the phone can't “call home” to the RIM servers. I can't find any documentation about device issues associated with the lack of a data package.

Don't get me wrong I think US Cellular is a great co...

Well said. I wanted to get a BB Pearl last spring and was all set to do so until I found out about the data. As a college student I cannot afford to pay the extra on top of my voice package but the PDA and full keyboard were very important to me. I ended up with a Razr2 and don't like it. I think people should be able to get whichever phone they want regardless of whether they choose to get the data plan or not. I have been with USCC for 6 years and never really thought of going elsewhere, but knowing what I do now about ATT this could be my last contract.
