Western Wireless was acquired in 2005 by Alltel. The move to the Alltel brand was completed in early 2006. Previously, the company was formed in 1994 through the merger of Pacific Northwest Cellular and General Cellular Corporation. The company offered service in 19 western states under the "Cellular One" brand name, a name the company also licensed to wireless service providers in 16 additional states and the Caribbean.
