There is a distinct difference though.
1x = voice (850MHz)
EVDO = data (1900MHz)
vs.
GSM/EDGE = voice/data mixed on 850/1900
3G UMTS/HSPA voice/data mixed on 850/1900
Sure data is only on 1900MHz, but as long as voice and data works, who cares. Voice is typically more sensitive to QoS than data. To the average consumer, it does not matter, as long as it works. 3G voice on 1900MHz only blew chunks because of capacity (only 5MHz) and poor signal.
Again, people don't care that VZW purchased VZW, they just care whether service works where they need it.
