I have a contract Verizon phone (Blackberry Tour) and a contract AT&T Phone (Samsung Eternity). The closest 3G for AT&T is 40 miles away in the twin Cities. I live in southern Minnesota. In a small town. But there is still EVDO here, and the speeds are amazing.

Everyone around here thinks AT&T sucks because they have terrible service down here. I just know its a bad spot for the network.

I like both networks, but appreciate that Verizon has the 3G option everywhere I go, including the 30,000 person town i live in.

Interesting,
In the metro where I live many VZW customers are using 1X on their aircards. We are switching them from VZW because of a lack of consistency in data rates. The context here is not what happens where you live but the integrity of VZW's ad campaign. This ad campaign shows a lot of truth stretching on the part of VZW's network and flat out misinformation about AT&T's.
Yes 1X does officially qualify as a 3G technology but EDGE has similar and sometimes faster speeds. In reality AT&T's rural coverage in WA and OR is much more reliable that VZW's. It is probably the same in many areas.

Don't expect to get at&t coverage (voice, data, anything) if you are in the midwest in a town with less then 100,000 people. I dont know if you have ever been to the midwest, but that isn't to many cities. Verizon doesn't say they have perfect coverage in WA or OR, look at the map.

In rural areas, that is not by the two east or west coast, Verizon beats AT&T every time.

I don't know about that... AT&T wasn't losing customers (except back when they were originally AT&T Wireless in 2003)
I have 3G on all carriers except Nextel in my city.
