Uh, duh, netboy. That 2100 MHz spectrum is already freed up. It is the downlink of the Advanced Wireless Services (AWS 2100+1700 MHz) spectrum in which T-Mobile USA is deploying its W-CDMA 3G network.

The problem is that Europe's 3G band is 2100 downlink, but 1900 uplink. The FCC would have to take back the 1900 band from the carriers in order to make Europe's 3G phones work in the US. That won't happen. Our AWS band has the uplink in the 1700 band, and a portion of that overlaps with Europe's 1800 band. Either way, we won't have a single band that'll be compatible worldwide. In fact, somewhere I read on this site that the EU is gonna test LTE in a new band they're creating in the 2.6ghz band. The US will be doing it in 700 & AWS initially.

You should have known that's what he meant.

People who purport to discuss wireless should already know that the 190 MHz frequency division duplex (FDD) of the UMTS 2100+1900 MHz band puts its uplink in direct conflict w/ the downlink of the PCS 1900 MHz band. And it would be patently ridiculous to scrap the long established PCS 1900 MHz band just so that a few phone addicts can use European 3G handsets.

that is like saying scraping long established analog tv signal is bad ideas!

free up 2100mzh, making LTE with 1 standard for the world, LTE at 2100mzh.

Are you high? Basically you want to destroy the PCS band? Who do you think would pay for such a venture? Ultimately the American consumer would. Prices wuld skyrocket! Also, the carriers would fight this tooth and nail. I suppose you would advocate forcing them to do this? All so we could have one New World Order. Ptooey!

4g in the us uses the 700mhz band. In addition, the transition will take years (or longer because there will be holdouts). Carriers have no intention of dropping their 3g, or even 2g networks anytime soon.

TV has been transitioning to digital for years now, it isn't this "sudden shift" that everyone is trying to make it to be.

Yes, it would be nice to have a global service, but it won't be anytime soon. And even if we switched it, you KNOW that some other country/region would make a different frequency so by the laws of consumerism, they would then have the (perceived) coolest phones, and people will be complaining on PS that we need to clear up THAT band so they can have their ultra cool phone 9000.

You put the "boy" in "netboy," as you seem to possess a 13 year old's understanding of these matters.

First, the DTV transition was an in band migration. TV broadcasters had only to migrate temporarily or permanently to another channel w/in the VHF & UHF TV bands. What you suggest -- scrapping the PCS 1900 MHz band so that the IMT 2100+1900 MHz band could exist in North America -- would require an out of band migration, as all PCS 1900 MHz licensees would have to either migrate permanently out of the PCS 1900 MHz band (to what spectrum?...
