Why not consider upgrading the REST of the network to 3G before worrying about upgrading the speeds?
...
It's the same reason cable companies increase internet speeds when Verizon deploys FIOS in an area. Competition pushes progress.
...
I hate technology! 😡
Just when you think you have the latest and greatest, here comes something better.
...
No matter what, whenever you think you have the latest and greatest thing, something else is going to come out shortly after. It's been the same old story ever since man learned to use a flint. The more important questions you should be asking are whether or not it does what you need (or want) it to and whether or not you are happy with it.
...
thats why the only thing that can beat the apple iPhone is the apple iPhone 3g!
🤣 jk 🤣
...
That's true, but unless they invest some serious $$$ into expanding their 3G coverage they are still FAR behind Verizon (and Sprint for that matter...), faster is great and I'd love to see these speeds, but they should focus on putting up good coverage before worrying about upgrading their existing 3G network.

Set being a fanbow aside, and try being unbias and honest.
In reality (not fanbow world) is AT&T's 3G network, again in REALITY, really that bad, and really that far behing verizon, and as you "say" behind sprint.
Remember now, be honest and unbias.

yes. but i will say that they are super fast and i teathered an n75 and talked at the same time! but their coverage is not as good as verizon or sprint.
down where i live there are huge gaps in coverage but due to budget cuts they aren't expanding coverage and we are loosing customers left and right because of it.
...
Yeah well I've been with Cingular/AT&T for 7yrs and I have no serious complaints. I have an N95 and I have also tethered and talked. Live in vegas.
Maybe AT&T only cares about large metro areas.
...
AT&T doesnt keep up witht the towers like Cingular did, like ive said, AT&T has cut there spending on things. But really, at&t needs to expand there coverage and 3G network before upgrading it. When upgraded, it will cost more to expand there 3G network.
...
I can understand AT&T wanting to improve speeds in such a large city (3rd largest in US), but honestly they are way behind Verizon's and Sprint's 3G upgrades. Go to AT&T's and Verizon's website and look at their 3G coverage. AT&T has a speed advantage but really needs to improve coverage (3G and voice) if they want to overtake Verizon/Alltel.
...
they won't. at&t has always been cursed with thinking they are too big to fall. they didn't do a very good job of making sure they are the best so if they became second there would be a reason for people to still want to come to them. at&t was the worst thing to happen to cingular...
...
Yeah, it's kinda sad. They really need to focus on expansion and not wait to begin LTE deployment. When the iPhone is released to other carriers they're going to see a massive churn increase. Verizons about to have the largest calling community and is pushing out LTE next year. AT&T had better wake up or else they'll be the next Sprint.
...
Ahhhhh. A Sprint bash. How did I know that was coming?
I'm just glad we where mentioned in there somewhere. 😁
...
I can't speak about the rest of the country but here in Virginia/West Virginia they just announced the 2009 budget to expand 3G throughout the entire network in this market. That will then dwarf Verizon/Sprints 3G coverage here. I would guess this will be happening throughout the country.
As far as cutting budget? The Mobility side of AT&T has recieved the largest budget and budget increases in the entire company.
...
Don't worry, before Sprint jokes it was AT&T Wireless. Well, actually, if Sprint follows AT&T Wireless, it does warrant a lot of worrying.
Just kidding. Sprint still has hope to avoid the peril of liquidation. I'm not the biggest fan of Sprint, but I think Sprint helps keep prices in check with the other competitors, so I hope it stays around.

I wonder if AT&T is trying to conserve capital with the expectations that consumers will start pinching pennies when it comes to mobility. I've already heard of people opting out of text messaging or dropping data plans to curb personal spending as they tighten their pocketbooks. When this happens, those companies lose revenue with no apparent offset in expense reduction, thereby making it more difficult for them to remain profitable, and in some cases, try to prevent the share price from collapsing. It's not just banks and automakers suffering. Hopefully those events will come to be for any company, but for some, it is inevitable.

yes but it is loosing customers. when customer growth...

what are you talking about. i work for at&t. i can be critical because it's how i make a living. the company isn't expanding coverage in about a 50 mile radius from where i work so yes, i can say that. and i can say for a fact that they have said in our area they cut the budget for network expansion. and if you knew anything about how wireless works you'd know that to cover the same amount of area at&t has to have more towers...
...
Yea, i knew at&t cut back on tower expansion and put it towards 3G, but look, AT&Ts Roaming, they dont have a set amount, so if a person is in a Roaming area too long, AT&T, at its right, can and may shut your service off, which is what happen to us.
And i do have to say, Cingular was alot better, i think its just the new CEO of AT&T Mobilty...
AT&T doesnt want to loose "The Best..." in there network, but are going to have too.
Verizon's GSM phones can go to the same places AT&Ts can now, and AT&T needs to STOP saying The Best Coverage, its not and the ratings show, but if you look at the bottom of the screen it says Based on Globel Coverage... well not anymore, Verizons GSM phone can Roam the same places as AT&T can now.
I miss...

Actually, Cingular was a joint venture between SBC and BellSouth. AT&T Wireless was spun off and independent from AT&T. AT&T Wireless was sold to Cingular in 2004. SBC bought AT&T and changed the name from SBC to AT&T. Now you have AT&T and BellSouth jointly own Cingular. AT&T bought BellSouth, and with it came BellSouth's share of Cingular, so now AT&T owned it all and named it all AT&T. So the former Baby Bell SBC (formerly called Southwestern Bell Communications) now c...

YES... You are true in the fact the AT&T landline side owns Cingular... But at&t wireless was purchased by Cingular. Every one Bi!ches about now that at&t owns Cingular its worse. There is nothing that at&t is doing or not doing that is making anything worse. People are just trying to blame what they don't understand on someone... GET OVER IT!!!!

Ok dude I'm not being a fanboy, I'd love to see AT&T expand their coverage, I'm sick of being stuck with CDMA phones, I want some variety! In reality their coverage is poor, check it out, maybe check the coverage maps and you'll see that Verizon and Sprint have MUCH better 3G coverage it's a fact not an opinion.
...
Oh well, really the only complaint I have about AT&T's network is sometimes MMS's take, way, way, way too long to get delivered. Maybe AT&T only cares about large metro areas.
...
Is it being a fanboy to say that AT&T's 3G is faster but not as expansive as Sprint and Verizon. If the coverage were equal then it is AT&T hands down.
...
actually according to the newest reports sprints 3g is the fastest.
