It seems like all the MVNOs started up by everyone and their grandmother's neighbor's ex-husband's half cousin have become defunct as of late.

Maybe I'm wrong, but it appears that if you're not Tracphone, Virgin or Helio you should probably just stay out of the game.

Tracfone, Virgin, Helio, and Boost are the major competitors atm. I agree, there are too many. Now you have Virgin and Boost doing unlimted area calling plans which makes them like a cricket service. If we did what they do in JP you would only have a couple service providers, all unlimted for the same price due to being regulated by the government. People there choose service based on phones (but you can unlock them) and international roaming rates.

Virgin (a partnership of Virgin and Sprint) and Boost(Nextel), wholly owned by Sprint in the US, are not really MVO's. OK, I cede Virgin is, or somewhat is. Both products are sold in Sprint Corporate Stores. Trac and Helio are true MVO's.

Oh well... it'll be an amusing story a year from now when Freedom's MVNO bites the dust, like so many others have.

I wonder when/why ppl got the idea that going into the MVNO biz was such a sure thing? I'm sure Amp'd, ESPN, Disney, etc were surpised when it wasn't, lol.

It depends on the MVNO model. The market has proved that brand name alone cannot sell a cellular service (IE: I like both ESPN and Disney brands, but would rather have Sprint or AT&T as a phone carrier). The phone is a utility service people.

Disney electricity? That can only run mickey mouse appliances? ESPN water service? You can only pick one water company--and ESPN provides gatoraide instead of plain water..who's going to go for that?

But if an MVNO can really serve a useful and universal purpose, it may have more success. A successful example would be prepaid services for the credit challenged and those who want a throw away phone.

Two businesses made it big here: Tracfone and Virgin. Tracfone is tracfone today due t...

They have been around forever as a Verizon MVNO. They must be doing something right.

What ever happened to P Diddy's MVNO? Agreed, the MVNO model is constantly changing, and without major VC money or some huge parent backing you, it is a no win proposition...
