I don't know why Moto is on the decline!
I like Motorola, they're an innovative company.

But I do think they concentrate way, way too much on fashion, rather than features.

If you actually worked in the industry you would understand why Moto sucks so bad. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Oh, well what do you do? And why do you think they are heading in a downward direction?

Motorola's problem is that they failed to diversify their portfolio.

So are you saying that they mostly focus on "fashion" in they're phones? That's certainly what I think. What do you think?

That's what they did in general. More specifically, once the RAZR became a hit, too many of the phones they released afterward were too tied in to the RAZR. Look at the Q. It's basically a RAZR in smartphone form.

This really hurt them overseas, especially in emerging markets. Nokia and Samsung are cleaning up in those markets. Motorola, on the other hand, failed to invest in those areas by creating quality entry level phones. Like you say, they focused too much on making phones for fashion.

I don't much like the phrase "entry level", just because someone is getting they're 1st cellphone ever, doesn't mean that it can't have a camera, or bluetooth, or speakerphone, or 3G.

I won't be too, too surprised by the way if LG passes Moto by Spring of '08.

Well, the fact of the matter is that both manufacturers AND carriers place phones in categories and those categories are high end, mid-level and entry level. There's nothing inherently wrong with the labels. The do need to figure out who's likely to want a $700 phone with everything packed in to it and who just wants a phone to make and receive phones calls.

And I would not at all be surprised to see Motorola in a complete free fall down this list.

now that free fall stuff is unlikely.. more than likely their market share will stabilize at or slightly below current levels.. it just has too much cash lying around.. 15 bil or some figure like that.. if organic growth at moto is hard to come...

So your saying another words, to buy themselves into 2nd?

First of all, does Moto even have THAT MUCH $$$ to just buy the wireless division of LG, or SS, or SE???

sure.. they have 15 or so bil in cash.. just get some debt on the books (ie mortgage the future) and call it a merger of "equals" and it can be done

oh and dont forget the usual stock market gibberish.. the so called synergies obtained by merging.. so all in all its definetely possible..

but moto should not go after the niche players like RIM or PALM or HTC etc.. that will be too expensive (something like 10-15 bil).. instead buy the bigger wireless players for maybe double that amount

Yeah a complete free fall is probably unlikely. I was getting way ahead of myself. What I mean though is that it wouldn't shock me to see Motorola stay in third place for for the foreseeable future. The only reason that I don't see them falling out of third is because there is such a huge divide between them and Sony Ericsson.

That has some truth to it.

As a wireless manager with Circuit City ('00-'04), I was constantly seeing problems with Moto-sourced handsets. Bad software, worse hardware...that was the theme of the day.
