Samsung Rises Past Motorola to Take No. 2 Spot
Ed Zander
I like Motorola, they're an innovative company.
But I do think they concentrate way, way too much on fashion, rather than features.
This really hurt them overseas, especially in emerging markets. Nokia and Samsung are cleaning up in those markets. Motorola, on the other hand, failed to invest in those areas by creating quality entry level phones. Like you say, they focused too much on making phones for fashion.
I won't be too, too surprised by the way if LG passes Moto by Spring of '08.
And I would not at all be surprised to see Motorola in a complete free fall down this list.

Well, the fact of the matter is that both manufacturers AND carriers place phones in categories and those categories are high end, mid-level and entry level. There's nothing inherently wrong with the labels. The do need to figure out who's likely to want a $700 phone with everything packed in to it and who just wants a phone to make and receive phones calls.
And I would not at all be surprised to see Motorola in a complete free fall down this list.
now that free fall stuff is unlikely.. more than likely their market share will stabilize at or slightly below current levels.. it just has too much cash lying around.. 15 bil or some figure like that.. if organic growth at moto is hard to come...

First of all, does Moto even have THAT MUCH $$$ to just buy the wireless division of LG, or SS, or SE???
but moto should not go after the niche players like RIM or PALM or HTC etc.. that will be too expensive (something like 10-15 bil).. instead buy the bigger wireless players for maybe double that amount

oh and dont forget the usual stock market gibberish.. the so called synergies obtained by merging.. so all in all its definetely possible..

OR how about this thought..
APPLE should buy out MOTO CELL PHONE DIVISION.. ๐

If you actually worked in the industry you would understand why Moto sucks so bad. ๐
That has some truth to it.
As a wireless manager with Circuit City ('00-'04), I was constantly seeing problems with Moto-sourced handsets. Bad software, worse hardware...that was the theme of the day.
besides that, unfortunately, he has run the company into the ground
