Install applications *not* through t-mobile app store?

Perhaps the main reason I haven't bought an iPhone is the restrictive policies apple has about application distribution.

If you write an application and I want to install it on my phone, I can't unless you submit it to apple and apple approves it and puts it on their app store. (Or I jailbreak my phone.)

As we have seen, apple has refused to distribute developers' applications when they don't like them, such as when they think they overlap with the built-in applications or when they might subvert Apple's or AT&T's revenue model.

Is the T-Mobile G1 any different? Can I install any application I want on my phone without going through T-Mobile/Google? Or do I have to download the applications from the T-Mobile app store? Is the pho...

I read there will be an easy way to install apps outside of Adroid Market without jailbraeaking. Sorry, I can't find the source right now.

The Android OS is 100% open so as far as I am aware the sky is the limit. We just had one of our engineers working with us today stating exactly this that many developers have already received information from the Android OS to have many apps ready and the phone hasn't even launched yet, and even better yet a lot of good software developers that left the Apple App Store for just that restrictive reason.

Any self-respecting developer wouldn't deal with lame-ass Apple and their stupid App Store.

Its not just the iphone all Apple products are like that. You can only put itunes on your ipod unless your smart enough to use limewire or know how to convert media.

so it didn't surprise me when i heard about that.

Convert the media? Just keep posting please. An iPod will play many kinds of files including a standard MP3. No file conversion needed. 🙄

There is a lot more to be said about open apps. Right now your cell phone is protected from the very things that harm or infest your computer. lets see open apps= more freebie's, great software, more options. I know I know, but this also equals junk apps, slow downloads, duplicate apps, even more duplicate apps, spyware, addware, junkware, every problem your computer at home faces. Only difference is if you got good anti-virus your cpu has a fighting chance. Hate to break it to you t-mobile fans but open apps=virus. Good luck,

Android is Linux based thus viruses are rare. So no, it doesn't automatically mean equal virus. Did you just sign up yesterday to bash this device? Don't kid yourself. There are plenty of junk/crap/duplicate apps for Windows Mobile, too.

But i dont need these so called junk apps to improve or make up for software my phone (g1) lackes. Im sorry but u need to read more reviews on google android and why other providers are not to excited about it and jumping on board right away. Yeah there are not to many linux based virus. But anyone with a brain would know that it only takes one good virus to shut down any software across the board.

Yeah dont bother to read your contract with your new g1 either. Im sure there's nothing useful in there. Or the text messages your receive or anything for that matter. Walk into a restaurant you never ate at and just order. You will sound just as smart as u do in this forum. Everyone reads even if its a billboard that advertises t-mobile.
