VCAST Music Disables MP3 Playback

The breakdown of things

The offers (OTA):

Sprint: $2.50/song
Verizon: $1.99/song
Cingular/iTunes: N/A
Amp'd: $0.99/song

The offers (PC):
Sprint: N/A
Verizon: $0.99/song
Cingular/iTunes: $0.99/song
Amp'd: N/A ??

Arguments coming from people that don't like the "new" service:

Pricing-
The only one that beats Verizon is Amp'd for OTA.

MP3 Disabling-
Well, as stated on this board many times Media Player 10 will auto-convert your MP3 files into WMA files for playback. This includes downloaded MP3 files or ripped MP3 files from your own personal collection.

MP3 to WMA Lossy format?-
Personally, I don't know enough about digital music encoding to know if Media Player 10 would convert it at a loss of quality or would be able to keep the quality the same, so I refuse to argue this. Though, I refuse to accept the argument that this DOES create a loss in format without some evidence (not just someone claiming it). The only thing I got from a google search is this website which offers a different software:

By using high quality encoder and decoder, the minimum sound quality loss during converting can be ensured.


So, if this software can ensure minimum sound quality loss, can't Media Player also do the same, and what is "minimum" is it a 1% loss? Is it 0.1%? Heck, who's to say that MP10 woudn't be able to convert WITHOUT a loss?

I personally don't see what the big deal is? The software automatically converts the files for you. Does it lose quality doing so? I don't know, we'll just have to hear it from a music expert. And, for arguments sake, let's say it does, to what degree does it lose quality? And does this "loss of quality" affect 99% of the people out there?

If the quality difference was a color code (RGB) it sounds like they are saying the following:

Verizon used to give us RGB(0,0,0) but when I convert the file it will be RGB(1,1,1) and I hate that. Is that about right? or is the quality loss so high that it's black and white? ie. going from RGB(0,0,0) to RGB(255,255,255)? Someone pleeeeeeeease find the facts on the actual quality conversion so we can put this to rest to see just how "lossy" this conversion will be!
