GSM or CDMA

Do you know if its going to be for GSM networks or CDMA, or even better BOTH? Also any word on high-speed data? (EV-DO or UMTS)Does it have a touchscreen? Reminds me of a mix between a Blackberry and a Treo 650 but with an internal antenna. This is a nice must have.

They don't have a CDMA razr yet. will not be UMTS, because it doesn't have a second camera for video calling, doesn't even look like it has wifi. This phone has 2 things going for it: 1.razr thinness, & 2.new windows mobile (that might not be such a good thing?)

They do have a CDMA RAZR just not in the US yet but they plan on bringing it to the US and the CDMA version has improvements along with a 1.3 MP camera.

This is a bit of a tangent, but are CDMA versions of phones better than GSM versions?

GSM versions are usually built first while the CDMA versions may be released from 6 months to a year later, usually the CDMA versions are much improved because the manufacturer has gotten feedback from customers and reviews from sources and they tend to the fix the issues. The CDMA version of the RAZR has high-speed EV-DO, BT, better display and a 1.3 MP Camera. I am not sure if it has a memory card slot.

#2 is crap (like you hinted at)

The real advantage should be bluetooth support for more than just headset/handsfree like the new GSM blackberries have. Another reason this can't be CDMA...

Motorola may want to play the part of Cingular's poster-boy again, like it did and is doing with the razr. First it was exclusive to cingular because cingular gave motorola a pretty penny for it. then when the term was up, they sold the silver razr to everyone else and got more money from cingular for the black razr, which has paid off for both. Now that cingular is focusing on reception everywhere and iternational travel, the q would be a nice sales pitch for the market, as much as the word has traveled from headquarters, they're planning the same strategy.

If it has an internal antenna, dollars to doughnuts says it's GSM. I'd seriously doubt that they would have UMTS on this one, too early in the tech cycle to have a full-featured phone with that capacity. They'll roll out UMTS phones as UMTS phones, not as fancy phones.

Looks like the much-rumored iTunes phone with the scroll wheel on the front.

It's GSM for now, but they did promise similar versions for EV-DO and UMTS as well.

Thanks I have been looking for this information everywhere. Let's hope Sprint picks this one up since they have a new partnership with them with the merger. No touch screen is a bummer though.

I recall several months back when the MPX(MPX300) got cancelled, there were rumours that there will be a razr type mpx phone coming out. Is this it? I presume not since it doesnt have the clamshell hinge. Has Anyone hear anything on a follow up to the mpx? Given Motorola's big PR event (MOTONOW), I thought there might be some news.

this is definitely motorola's new direction. the mpx was canned. that's not to say th idea of a pocket pc version of this phone with a touch screen wont come out, just that this new Q idea is definitely the direction motorola is heading.

this version, with smartphone software and no touchscreen will probably sell better than a pocket pc version would have, so i think it's probably a good business decision, especially when competing UI / price wise with the blackberry

IMO the original design/concept of the MPX was perfect, flawless. Obviously, the memory and processor and no edge support let it down but I'm surprised that Motorola would walk away from such a good concept as the MPX.

paddy, i think the *idea* of the mpx was really cool, but did you ever use one? what a disaster. it was uncomfortable and hard to use no matter how you had it open. if it was open like a phone, the clasp for the second hinge poked you in the face. if you had it open like a pager, the keyboard was so mishapen and cheesy that it made typing a chore. and darn that thing was slow. i love the idea of a clamshell pda phone, but i'd much prefer something like the nokia 9300, moto a630 style with a second phone ui on the outside; or even a slider / spinner screen like the hiptop or the new samsung ev-do ppc phone for korea.

I havent used it but I've read several reviews and many many forum posts and the vast majority have liked it if you exclude the processor, memory and edge issues. Most of these major issues you mentioned can be corrected. It was the most talked about phone in 2004 so obviouly Motorola hit a nerve with it, thats what I find it hard to believe they would just toss in the towel on the design.

Don't worry, if they are working on a hinged phone they will continue to follow their strategy and announce it about 18 mos before the first engineering model even exists.

I'm afraid I was wrong. Sorry for the misinfo.

I'm not saying there won't be a GSM/EDGE version, but I can't promise it.

Scratch everything I said about it definitely being GSM. I was mistaken. Unfortunately, that's all I can say for now.
