Local pride

I met a Taiwanese expat recently who told me how her family back home chastised her for carrying a Samsung phone. She should have been using an HTC from her home country, said her parents.

I shouldn't have been surprised, but it reminded me of how almost no one here will chastise you for not carrying a Motorola.

The only thing I really see some American pride in is buying cars. Some people just buy Ford or GM because they're American.

With most things though, it's all imports, so we don't have much choice... And I'm not going to pick a subpar product just because it's "American."

We have enough home-grown food to feed ourselves 2 times over. They probably wouldn't have enough food for their current population without selling exports to buy imported food. Buying imported brands is not something they should do too much.

Side note: our auto manufacturers are run by union brats who get paid twice as much as I do and regularly threaten to stop working because they don't get paid enough. No way would I buy a POS car I don't want to subsidize them.

I just rented an ecomony car from Hertz and they gave me a Fiat 500. You want to talk POS. With only 2K miles on it, it had some awful sounding engine noises, foul burning smells, horrible NVH & the suspension was very wobbly over bumps & in turns. I actually took it back to get something else and they gave me a Ford Fiesta. Felt like a Mercedes-Benz in comparison. Very quiet, no smells & good NVH and that with 30K miles on it. I have been renting cars bi-monthly or monthly for the last 7 years and owned over 40 (both foreign & domestic). Also have driven over 1 million miles so have a fair idea of what constitutes a "quality automobile". No way I think anyone should buy a piece of trash Italian car & spend $6000 more over an American Fiesta...

I like having the choice of Apple, Samsung, Motorola, LG, Pantech, Nokia, PCD, Huawei, ZTE, etc. Just like I love all the car choices we have. How would you know the Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Elantra, Chevy Sonic or VW Golf are such good choices without having a trashy Fiat 500 around, lol?

Some of these responses just make me laugh.

Please then explain why the iPhone is so popular in Korea? The Motorola StarTac was so popular, they were making newer versions of it YEARS after it ended production in the states. Motorola even released a color screen version of the phone.

Nationalist sentiments and some protectionist policies aside, I think there are some basic economic reasons. Competition in the electronics industry is brutal in South Korea. Japanese camera makers used to release their digital cameras in Korea before they did in Japan and globally because the market was better at finding the bugs.

I know many will take offense at this and there are plenty of happy HTC owners, but I also have a lot of friends who wo...

I'm sure there was a significant import tariff that may also have priced HTC a little higher as well. Go to Korea and see how nearly every car on the road is Korean made as well as all nearly all of the consumer electronics and appliances used by the population. National pride runs deep and that's the way it should be. I still drive american made cars and always try to buy american made products first but it really is a choice that's harder and harder to make.

America's funny--we'll fan-boy the hell out of websites, proclaiming our loyalty to certain brands, but it's a sham...Americans go where the prices are lowest.

Is that really true? Look how many Americans buy Hondas simply because of their reputation? There's a certain market that simply buys the lowest priced good, but if anything, Americans are *super* loyal to brands.

No, you're an Apple fan-boi, and Americans are loyal across certain demographics--go to the west coast, where there's a large non-white demographic, and you'll see that foreign car makes are much more popular. Go to the mid-west, Texas, Idaho, etc...and you'll see that American makes are far more popular.
