Such a simple name. Really, I think they're just going to get rid of the Nextel, and just say Sprint. Sprint-Nextel is rediculous. Just like they call the new Cingular Cingular-AT&T Wireless, right? No they call it Cingular. Anyone think the name is a little stupid?

T-Mobile is not dumb, it's rather smart. The problem is, few people in the U.S.A. recognize the T brand.

The big magenta T is the Deutsche Telekom logo, and you can see it all over Europe. In addition to the global T-Mobile brand, there're also T-Com, T-Online, and T-Systems brands.

In the case of Cingular and ATT there was no any merger. Cingular bought ATTW, so they are just CINGULAR.
But SPRINT-NEXTEL it's a very stupid name, i would prefer: SPRINTEL or SEXTEL or NEXTPRINT.

SEXTEL would certainly grab attention. Then Mr. Branson will decide to buy the whole thing and call it Virgin MegaSex.

often in the case of mergers (as opposed to buyouts) the newly merged company takes on some sort of hyphenation for a few years (the worst example i can think of is glaxo smith-kline beecham). this makes customers who were loyal to one brand or feel like they are still with the same familiar company. it also helps execs who want to feel like it's still "their" company.

however after a few years the companies tend to simplify their name again or come up with a totally new one (like, say, cingular? remember that used to be bell south and pac bell, and then sbc-bell south and sbc-pacbell and the cingular.)

i'm guessing the new company will be called sprint or some totally new name in 18-24 months.
