Sprint and Nextel today announced that their boards of directors have unanimously approved a definitive merger agreement. The new company, which will be called Sprint Nextel, will spin off Sprint's local telecommunications business following the merger. The new company will migrate Nextel's push-to-talk services to Sprint's new CDMA EV-DO network. The two companies have a combined value of $70 billion and serve over 35 million wireless subscribers, plus another 5 million through affiliates and partners. The companies operate networks that directly cover nearly 262 million people, more of the U.S. population than any other carrier. Sprint and Nextel are being valued equally in the merger and their shareholders will each own approximately 50 percent of the new company after the merger. The merger is expected to close in the second half of 2005.

which is going to have better coverage Cingular or sprint

I have sprint now but it sucks in my area so I'm switching over to cingular which is much better. Should I hold onto Sprint now since the merger????

By the way when I was in Mississippi Sprint or Nextel didnt work but Cingular & ATT did!!!

So which do you think we'll have better coverage in the next 6 months or so Cingular or Sprint???
Cingular has the largest digital network in America, but the service will always depend on where you use your phone most. If Sprint didn't have good service in your area, then they're still not going to until they make changes there (which could take...

What it all means...

So what dose everyone think of this?
it means no more fast walkie talkie for nextel..NOw u should def. switch to verizon.

sprint and nextel have the worst service right next to cingular & t-mobile

Is it at all possible for us to stay on subject? What dose to Sprint Nextel deal mean for the wireless consumers of America? How about for the workers of both Sprint and Nextel?

BOLD PREDICTION!! Cingular Absorbs T-Mobile Within The Next Six Months

It's the natural order of survive and conquer. Only the strongest and richest survive.
I do not think that would happen. T-mobile runs mostly off of Cingular and AT&T. The only reason T-mobile offers so much is because they do not have much of a network. It may seem like you "Get More", but in all reality, their network is not the best....

I was thinking the same thing. T Mobiles market is all agreements with them anyways. I say take the money and run. Being on the retail side of things i say the fewer the companies the simpler for the comsumers who are usually confused anyways.

Two problems with your bold prediction:

1) The FCC will not allow Cingular to have any more spectrum. They were forced to sell off licenses where they would own more than 70MHZ in any market.

2) T-Mobile USA is a part of T-Mobile worldwide, a mu...

Wait I just realized something. I know for a fact Vodaphone owns 45% of VZW, do they not also own at least a portion of T-Mobile as well? Perhaps this is all falling into the lap of someone else. T-Mobile is too large for Cingular to buy out and if an...

You're going to call it Sprint-Nextel??? ARE YOU KIDDING?

Such a simple name. Really, I think they're just going to get rid of the Nextel, and just say Sprint. Sprint-Nextel is rediculous. Just like they call the new Cingular Cingular-AT&T Wireless, right? No they call it Cingular. Anyone think the name is a little stupid?
Yeah...it is a little silly. I personally think it should be Sprextel.
i thought tmobile was the dumbest thing i ever heard but they blew that out of the water, can we get any less creative
...
In the case of Cingular and ATT there was no any merger. Cingular bought ATTW, so they are just CINGULAR.
But SPRINT-NEXTEL it's a very stupid name, i would prefer: SPRINTEL or SEXTEL or NEXTPRINT.

Technology Thread Compatible or Not?

This is really confusing. I don't know if anyone familiar with spectrum can explain this. I know that iDEN and CDMA are incompatible. But I do know that Nextel uses the 800MHz spectrum, could SPCS convert this to CDMA and use it on their network. Personally I don't hope they do, because they wouldn't be Sprint PCS anymore, because that isn't PCS. That was their whole slogan the largest PCS network in America, built from the ground up and all that crap. Isn't Nextel getting 1900MHz spectrum? Is that incompatible with current Sprint phones if it were turned into CDMA spectrum? Can any Sprint phones roam on the new spectrums? What would they do to the spectrum if it were imcompatible? Auction it off? I heard it was extremely valuable...

Sprint Pricing

I hope Nextel does not pick up Sprint pricing. It may be cheaper, but when you think about it, with Sprint you have to pay for every additional feature such as mobile to mobile and Ready Link.
Not exactly. If you have an account with more than one phone, mobile to mobile is included. As far as Ready Link, there are specific plans with RL included but are for business customers.
Nextel is mainly aimed at businesses that are going to need those services anyways. A large portion of Sprints customer base is people who just want a phone to make calls and if they have to pay $15 more for all these features they will never use they...

Sprint-Nextel Merger is Another Blow to Consumers’ Pocketbooks
Second Major Merger of Telecoms Could Signal Reduction in Price Wars and Innovative Service; Customers Likely Will Have to Buy New Phones

(Washington, D.C.) – The proposed merger between Sprint and Nextel is another blow to consumers’ pocketbooks, as the further reduction of competition in the wireless market likely spells an end to the lower prices and innovative services consumers have received from cell phone companies, Consumers Union said today.

“This merger will do little for consumers, but most importantly, it signals the likely end to the possibility of build...

Verizon and Sprint Deal Still Imminent After Aquiring NEXTEL

So Sprint and Nextel are merging now huh?

Heres what I foresee:

Verizon is actually happy right now because what is going to happen is Sprint is going to convert all Nextel's customers from iDEN to CDMA at Sprint's expense. With the walkie talkie, voice, and data services combined; Verizon will then make a bid after Sprint. That transistion should be very easy since both carriers use CDMA. You will then see Cingular make a bid for T-Mobile. Ultimately you will have CDMA vs. GSM in USA. With the price of GSM being so cheap, you will see Verizon struggle a little bit because CDMA is newer and just a little bit more expensive. Therefore the consumer will be paying out for it at first, then after a quick struggle, Verizon would be able to ...

Every Company has a downfall

With the recent merger of Cingular and AT&T, it is all about who has the most customers. This merger almost is like a Ralph Nader coming in to spoil the party. Just keep in mind every company has a downfall. No company is the best.
wow your smart dude!!
In the wireless industry it is who has the most bandwidth, because all future product offerings are going to take a ton of bandwidth. BAndwidth was the main reason Cingular went after ATTWS and why Sprint and Nextel are merging.

He who has the band...

I've been waiting for this!

I like the direct connect, i have quite a few friends with nextel. But i have sprint cause service is more important to me then the direct connect, but i do have RL but i now only have one friend who has is. Once the two services are able to work together i do believe this service will be the greatest!!

Should i switch to Sprint

After hearing about the sprint/nextel merger the first thing that came to my mind was:

Should i switch?

Being a very tired verizon customer and so very sick of their phones ( and not wanting to go with Cingular)

I began wondering should i finally get a cool Sanyo phone and because they are Merging with nextel mybe they will have a better coverage area, and I've always like Nextel push to talk service.

you think it's a good time to switch?
This merge isn't going to affect customers of either company much, if at all for a few years (at least two because it will take one year to approve and then at least another to integrate the networks). Because Sprint and Nextel utilize different tech...

What about Cingular's?

Sprint-Nextel claims that they will offer coverage to the largest population of any wireless provider. 262 million. Cingular already offers it to 268 million. How is Sprint-Nextel's number the largest?
I would figure they are talking about the rural markets that Cingular does not cover?

Amazing!

I am just amazed at the rabid loyalty to one carrier or the other. The way some on this site go at it, you'd think they owned the companies. Lets face it, they all have coverage holes. I am was with ATT (GSM), now Cingular and I have no problems. 🙂 If Verizon is great, good for them, but I love my mmode and I always have full strength signal anywhere I've been. I'm not going anywhere.

news: Motorola to make dual-mode phone for Sprint Nextel

Motorola to make dual-mode phone for Sprint Nextel

WASHINGTON (AFX) -- Nextel CEO Timothy Donahue said Wednesday that Motorola (NYSE: MOT - news) will make a dual-mode phone for Nextel and Sprint after the two companies complete their merger. Such a phone will be necessary to bridge the company's two incompatible networks as they move to integrate customers onto one upgraded network within a few years of the merger's completion. Motorola stock took a dive last Friday on concerns that the merger would cut into phone sales. Motorola supplies virtually all of Nextel's phones, which are based on a unique technology called Iden that was developed by Motorola. In recent trades, Motorola shares rose 39 cents to $17.24.
