I know you mentioned the RIM server outages. iCloud has had some similar issue lately pushing email around but little is mentioned about it.

I had an iPhone 4s for a bit and ran into several large issues with email. The iPhone and my Mac desktop would fight each other over email account access. The iPhone would check email on the server and not sign out for a while which locked any other computer out for the time being. No reasonable workaround in my case. Plus if you have multiple emails like I do, access to each inbox is a few more steps. Not efficient for me also. with 500k+ apps around, you still can't arrange the phone well.

Blackberries can be customized far more. I know Android can too. My family has an iPad and it works incredibly well for them. I guess it all depends on what you need.
